Coaler matmen outmuscled by Hilltoppers

    Joliet Catholic Academy handed the Coal City wrestling team only its second loss of the season Saturday, defeated the Coalers by a single point. But Coal City finished the day on a strong note, upending Bishop McNamara 42-23 to improve to 16-2 overall.
    Coal City got their points from two forfeits, two decisions, two pins and one major decision but JCA won the match by a point, getting the help of one more forfeit that really made the difference.

Coalers blast Wilmington, edge Sandwich in OT

    Make that five wins and counting.
    The Coal City boys basketball team picked up their fifth win of the season, taking a game with Sandwich right down to the wire and besting the Indians, 48-47 in overtime.
    At halftime it was 21-20, good guys with the lead.
    Sandwich then took control over the Coalers, scoring 11 points to Coal City’s eight.
    The Coalers (5-2, 3-0  conference)  tied it up in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points to the Indians’ 12, sending this game into overtime.

    The Coal City girls basketball team hosted an impressive Providence team Monday, suffering a 77-27.
    Providence put near 30 points up in the second quarter and never looked back.
    Providence was already leading 17-9 in the first quarter before things got out of reach.
    The Lady Coalers (6-4, 2-1 conference) scored only five points in the second quarter while Providence tallied 28 points to lead 45-14 at the half.

    The Coaler matmen were handed their first loss in the Downers Grove South 16-team dual tournament, yet they earned fifth in the tournament with a 4-1 record while also adding two more wins earlier in the week.
    “Daniel Jezik got injured and was not able to compete after the first dual,” said CC coach Mark Masters. “His presence against Grant would have put us in the gold bracket in the top four but the kids battled back and got the next best thing in the silver bracket.”

    Coal City wrestlers kept it rolling with two more wins to improve their streak to seven in a row to remain undefeated.
    Coal City  blasted Pontiac with the help of eight pinfalls on Tuesday night.
    Their widest margin of victory was the nearly 60-point win over Clifton Central as the Comets got two decisions for six points but the Coalers dominated the rest of the match, adding seven more pins and a couple of major decisions.

Coaler hoopsters knock off Manteno

    The Coal City boys made their presence known Friday as they matched Manteno shot for shot and eventually pulled off a 66-59 upset knocking Manteno out of the ranks of the undefeateds. The Coaler cagers pulled away in second quarter and made it last.
    “They came out hot this season,” said Coaler coach Keith Kiper. “We had to play a really good game to knock them off and we had some great wins that really spotted us a few in the first quarter and then came back, matching it the rest of the way.”

    The Coal City girls kept it going, picking up a 49-42 win in a battle against Wilmington on Monday night.
    The Lady Coalers (5-2, 2-0 conference) led by a slim 13-9 margin after one quarter before scoring an impressive 15 points to take a 28-22 lead by half-time.
    From there, they outscored the ‘Cats 8-7 in the third to extend their lead out to seven and then they matched the ‘Cats in points in the final quarter but they coasted to a seven point win over their rivals to notch their second straight win.

    The IHSA state football champions have been crowned. Among the eight teams to win Friday and Saturday in Champaign is Joliet Catholic Academy who entered the playoffs with the weakest record of 5-4.
    Here is a breakdown of each of the class champions.

    In the small division, Forreston (12-2), the number six seed, upset two-seeded Camp Point Central (12-2), 44-6, thanks to a huge ground attack. Forreston ran the ball 59 times for 405 and five touchdowns.

Coalers win the first five matches to start the year

    The Coal City varsity wrestlers got off to an impressive start, winning their first five matches to start the season.
    The Coalers had a single-digit win over Marist to open the season, getting three pin-falls. Then they cruised by Richards, getting the help of six forfeits. Their biggest gap of the day was their win over Downers Grove, where a pin-fall, techinal fall, a major decision and a decision gave Downers Grove 18 points but Coal City dominated the rest of the way.

Coaler hoops falls short to IC in Turkey Tourney

    With two wins under their belts in the Turkey Tournament, the Coal City boys basketball team matched up against IC Catholic, the third place team from the Manteno tournament, and IC got the best of the Coalers, taking a 67-55 win on Saturday.
    IC’s late scoring with 28 points in the final frame that led to an IC win.
