Coalers edge Tigers in defensive game

    The Coal City boys basketball team pulled out a big 43-35 win over Herscher on a Friday night conference showdown. The Coaler defense was up and ready the whole game.
    The Coalers (13-7, 7-1) took a 9-6 lead in the first quarter and then maintained a two point lead going into the half, despite being outscored by the Tigers.
    Herscher tried to claw their way back into this game by outscoring the Coalers, 15-13 in the third quarter to tie the game at 27 at the end of the third quarter.

Coalers comeback falls short against Panthers

    The Coal City boys basketball team played a back and forth game with Manteno on Friday, suffering a 60-58 loss in the last game of the I-8 Tournament. The Panthers went on a run in the third quarter that gave them the slim advantage.
    The Coalers (12-7) and Panthers were tied 33-33 at the half.
    It was really anyone’s game as they came out in the third.
    That’s when Manteno took the reigns, going on an 18-11 run to regain the lead.

Coal City wrestling regional Coalers will give it their best in a tougher 2A

    Saturday’s 2A wrestling regional at Coal City will feature some of the toughest talent in the state. It’s also the first time Coal City enters the post season among bigger 2A schools.

Top-ranked Panthers too tough for the Coalers

    The third ranked Coalers met their match Wednesday in what could be a preview of what might happen next month at Class 2A Dual team state.
    The Coal City wrestlers squared off against Washington, the No. 1 team in the state, losing 34-24 after claiming six of 14 bouts against a team that has six state wrestlers, two ranked at the top in their weight class.

    The Coal City boys basketball team played came out shooting Friday, gained a sizeable lead and held off late-charging Lisle to win 68-65 win.  
    The Coalers (12-6, 6-1) started out fast against one of the best teams in the I-8, building a 7-0 lead before going on a 19-14 run to finish the first quarter of play.
    They kept it up in the second quarter with an even stronger 17-6 run and the Coalers owned a 36-20 advantage at the half.

    The state-ranked Coalers (34-2) dominated the conference wrestling tournament Monday with every team member placing. In the end the Coalers out-distanced the second place team by 107 points.
    Coal City tallied 286 points to finish first.    Following them were Sandwich (179), Willmington (154.50), Lisle (125) and Peotone (89). Reed-Custer came in 10th with 28 points.

Lady Coaler comeback short against Plano

    After the close win over Westmont in the opening round of the I-8 Tournament, the Lady Coalers were unable to get past Plano Monday to advance, losing 55-45.
    “We gave no effort in the first half,” said CC coach Brad Schmitt. “We gave a big effort in the second half. I don’t know why we had a tale of two halves again but we did and we were down 22 points to start the fourth, we battled back to down three with a minute to go and they made some free-throws at the end to seal it.”

Coalers set record with PORTA win

    On Friday the wrestling Coalers improved to 32-2 to set a new school record for wins in a season.
    It was no contest as Petersburg (PORTA) got their points from two pins but while the Coalers showed why they’re one of the toughest teams in the state, putting together a dominating performance. They had six pins, four forfeits and two major decisions to provide them with the firepower needed.

Lady Coalers handle two big tests, remain in the I-8 middle

    The Coal City girls played two high caliber teams Saturday, walking away 1-1. Their loss was 46-26 to Marian Catholic, who scored early and often.
    The Lady Coalers (7-13, 3-6) were held to just eight points in the first half as Marian Catholic went on a 25-8 run to build a lead.
    They extended their advantage in the third quarter, outscoring the Coalers, 14-10.
    The Lady Coalers outscored Marian Catholic in the fourth quarter but at that point, it was too late.

Coaler comeback upends the Blue Devils

    The Coal City basketball team downed Peotone 66-56, thanks to a third quarter rally that got the game back under wraps for Coal City after they trailed for most of the first half.
    The Coaler boys (11-6, 5-1) were down 31-21 at the half but were not counting themselves out.
    They got back in the game in the third, taking the lead over the Blue Devils with a 30-10 run.
    That run gave Coal City a 10-point lead and more importantly, the momentum.
