    On Saturday, the Coal City girls soccer team stayed with Ottawa Township High School, thanks to the tremendous effort from senior striker Helen Onsen.

Emerson’s two homers upend Sandwich

    High fives were doled out to Coal City’s Madison Emerson Monday after she belted two home runs during a 3-2 victory over Sandwich.
    The Lady Coaler softball team (4-4) was thankful for Emerson’s 2-0 shot in the third, her second of the year to take the lead.
    Sandwich hit an RBI double in the fourth to make it, 2-1.
    They tied it up, 2-2 in the fifth on an RBI groundout.
    Emerson hit her second home run of the game on a towering shot in the sixth inning to give the Coalers the 3-2 win.

Lady Coalers silenced by Pontiac

    The Lady Coaler softball team faced a tough Pontiac pitching staff, getting shutout 10-0 on Monday.
    Pontiac took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as they homered twice and plated another with an RBI single.
    The Coalers (2-1) looked like they had something going, getting a two out hit off the bat of Madison Emerson but a pop out to the centerfielder ended any chances of a rally in the first.
    Pontiac put a two spot on the board in the second to extend their lead to 5-0.

Coalers fend off Joliet West, seven straight wins

    The Green Machine rumbles on. The Coal City baseball team was back to work on Monday, making it a week’s worth of wins as they edged Joliet West, 8-6.
    Coal City (8-1) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first when Keegan Gagliardo drew a walk with one out. Jack Bunton brought him around to score on an RBI triple over the centerfielder’s head to make it 1-0.
    Austin Pullara’s sacrifice fly brought home Bunton to give them a 2-0 lead.
    Joliet West  came back with two of their own to tie things, 2-2.

Coaler pitching continues to dominate, fourth straight victory

    The Coalers made it four straight victories, getting a convincing 9-3 win over Prairie Central Monday after jumping on the board early on and never looking back.
    Connor Best led the Coalers with two of their 12 hits while driving in four runs.

Lady Coalers fall to Morris on a last second penalty kick

    The Coal City girls soccer team got their season started on Thursday in a battle with Morris and it didn’t turn out quite how they would have liked in a 1-0 loss.
    Coal City held Morris off in the first half and Morris followed suit, keeping the Coalers off the scoreboard as the two went into halftime scoreless.
    The two keepers were spectacular in the game, especially Lady Coaler keeper Brittny White, who saved eight goals in the game before coming out due to a yellow card.

Coaler tracksters up and running

    The Coaler track teams got in the race Saturday opening the season at the Reed-Custer Comet Classic against eight other teams.
    The Coalers needed more individuals to place in the team standings as they ended up near the bottom of the pack.
    The Coaler boys placed seventh overall with 34 points. The indoor meet was won by  Plano (122 points) who beat out Clifton (80) and Bishop McNamara (65), the top three teams. The Reed-Custer guys came in fourth with 46 points.

Four Coalers earn All-Conference honors

    Three Coal City boys basketball players were chosen to the Interstate Eight All Conference teams while a fourth earned special mention.
    The Coalers finished first in the I-8 with a 17-9 (9-1) regular season record while Sandwich won the I-8 Tournament championship, thus, the Indians had three players named All Conference.
    Making first team All Conference were Coaler juniors Austin Pullara and Payton Hutchings.

Coalers take two of three in PBR Metro East Kickoff Classic

    The Coaler baseball team went 2-1 during a weekend road trip after beating Harrisburg 3-2 Saturday during the Prep Baseball Report Metro East Kickoff Classic.
    Coal City got an excellent start on the mound from number two pitcher Keegan Gagliardo as Harrisburg was unable to score a run on the southpaw.
    Gagliardo went four shutdown innings, giving up just one hit  while striking out two and walking just one batter.

CCMS wrestlers win first-ever state championship

    It was a storybook season for the Coal City Middle School wrestling team as they brought home the school’s first ever state championship wrestling on Saturday.
    The Warriors won the IESA state wrestling title in DeKalb with 155 points. Taylor Ridge Rockridge placed second with 113.5 points and third place was Roxanna with 108. Reed-Custer finished sixth with 77 points while Wilmington ended up 37th with 23.5 points.
