Coalers crown two state champions

    Coal City brought claimed some gold Saturday, crowning a pair of champions during the individual state wrestling tournament.
    Alex Friddle (132) and Daniel Jezik (182) became the first Coalers in school history to claim first place in the 2A class.

    The Coalers complemented their season with a 62-55 win over Plano to keep control of I-8 conference with the Sandwich Indians (19-8, 7-2) right on their heels.
    “We had a tough match up with an athletic Plano team,” said CC coach Keith Kiper. “Both teams battled with each other the whole game. We were able to seal the game with a hot free-throw percentage from the line in the fourth.”
    Coal City (16-7, 8-1) gained a 7-4 lead early in the first quarter and never looked back.

Five Coalers earn trip to state speech final

The Coaler speech team posted a fourth place finish at the Normal Community West Speech Sectional and advanced five students to the Illinois High School Association State Finals.
Coal City High School junior Luke Cairns was the sectional champion in radio speaking and will be making his first trip to the state finals this weekend at the Peoria Civic Center.
Carins advanced to the sectional with a fourth place finish at the regional contest a week earlier.

Eight Coalers earn bid for state

    After sending four wrestlers to state a year ago, the Coalers doubled the number of qualifiers by advanced eight wrestlers from the Geneseo Sectional Saturday, where everything was clicking for the third ranked Coalers.
    Coal City crowned two sectional champions. Alex Friddle (132) and Daniel Jezik (182) stayed undefeated by placing first.
    Teammates Ashton Harvey (160) and Ryan Wasielewski (152) finished sectionals in second.

Coal City sending their best eight to state

    The Coalers have been squeezing in extra practice time this week with the Class 2A state wrestling tournament scheduled to start Thursday. Among the 672 state qualifiers will eight Coal City wrestlers who now get a shot of bring home a medal.
    It won’t be an easy task as the Coalers move up to 2A for the first time in school history.

Lady Coalers fall to Morris in regional

    The Lady Coalers went one and done in the regional in a 30-25 loss to Morris on Monday night in the Ottawa Regional.
    The Lady Coalers (8-21) lost the lead early watched their season come to an end in a low-scoring affair.
    Morris took an 18-13 half-time lead. But the Lady Coalers didn’t quit, outscoring the Lady Redskins, 4-2 in the third to bring themselves back within three points heading into the fourth quarter.
    The Redskins scored another 10 points to seal the game and the Lady Coaler season.

The Coalers drain the luck of the Irish

    The Coal City boys basketball team erupted with four double-digit quarters for a big 61-39 win over Seneca on Tuesday.
    “We played some outstanding defense tonight,” said CC coach Keith Kiper. “The guys came out with a great level of intensity and that is what is needed to beat a Seneca team. We got great contributions from guys coming off the bench that really propelled us to the win.”
    The Coalers (14-7, 7-1)went on a 17-10 run in the first quarter to gain  the lead and take the momentum away from the hosting Irish.

Coaler matmen have record-setting regional

    The Coal City matmen  did something that hasn’t been done in school history. They advanced all 14 of their wrestlers to the Class 2A sectionals.
    The Coalers (36-3) crowned six regional champions, had three place second and five more wrestlers finish in third. Only the top three regional placers advance to sectional.

Lady Coalers hope to rebound before regional

    The Lady Coaler basketball players were unable to stop Pontiac’s 20-6 run in the first quarter that put the game out of reach early in a 64-28 loss on Monday.
    The Lady Coalers (8-19, 2-7) were behind the eight ball early, mustering three layups in 8 minutes.
    They gained a little hope, scoring 14 in the next quarter but Pontiac stayed one step ahead of them, scoring 17 points to extend their lead to 37-20 at the half.

Sectional will feature over 30 state ranked wrestlers

    The Coalers had an impressive performance during their own regional, advancing all of their wrestlers to the Geneseo 2A Sectional beginning Friday.
    This sectional could be the toughest in the state, featuring 34 state ranked wrestlers and only 220 pounds remains wide open. The top four placers at sectional advance to state which will be Feb. 14-16 in Champaign.
