Coalers fall to Brother Rice on two errors, remain at top of I-8

The Coalers had Monday’s game against Westmont canceled so at the last minute they played one of the best teams in the state instead.
The Coal City baseball team traveled to Standard Bank Stadium to play Brother Rice, a team in Class 4A loaded with college talent with seven players committed to Division I colleges.
The Coaler stuck with them for most of the contest, getting an excellent start on the mound from Payton Hutchings (6-1, 0.76 ERA). But a couple of costly errors hurt the Coalers as they lost 3-1.

Lady Coalers fall to Reed-Custer

The Lady Coaler softball team was surprised in the seventh inning Friday when Reed-Custer tallied three runs to rally 4-2.
Reed-Custer scored the opening tally of the game in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead on an RBI single.
Coal City (7-11) fired back in the sixth to take a 2-1 lead on a two-run double off the bat of Abbie Cullick.
Reed-Custer came back to win it with three in the final inning, including a two-run home run by Abrey Ricketts.

Seneca surprise stops the Lady Coalers after they swept Lisle

Seneca scored enough runs in one inning to undo the Lady Coaler softball team on Monday, 7-4.
It was a pitching duel through the first three innings as it was Maci Baldauf for the Lady Coalers, who bent but didn’t break.
The Coalers (7-9) finally got through on Seneca’s Taya Roe for four runs in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
Madelaine Ragain laced a double to lead off the inning.

Coaler duo no-hits Seneca for three-game win streak

On Monday, Payton Hutchings and Connor Best combined for a no-hitter over the Seneca Irish.
Hutchings (6-0, 0.90 ERA) started the game, going 3.0 innings, striking out six batters in a 14-0 victory. Best finished off the final six batters with zeroes in the scorebook and four out of the six went down on strikes.
And the offense gave the duo plenty of run support. The Coalers (17-2) grabbed a 4-0 lead in the first, started by Keegan Gagliardo with a one out single.zx

Lady Coalers win own shootout

The Coal City girls soccer team invited three other teams for a shootout on Saturday and the Lady Coalers ended up winning it all.
In their final game of the day, the Lady Coalers tied Peotone, 0-0.
Throughout the tournament, Helen Onsen, Syndi Bortles and Mackenzie Leach scored goals.
Brittny White, Onsen and Leach got named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Coalers kept it rolling along, getting two goals to pick up a win over Beecher.

Lady Coalers fall to PC, four game skid

On Saturday, the Coaler softball team were rattled by Prairie Central during a double header in which they lost both games.
Coal City lost the second game 20-5 after four innings.
Coal City (5-8) took a 5-3 lead in the second but that would be all the runs they would muster.
Zoe Wills came in to score on a passed ball to make it 3-1 after leading off the inning with a big double.
Abbie Cullick scored Abby Pelnarsh on a rocket RBI singlt to make it a 3-2 game.

Hutchings shuts down the Redskins, Coalers improve to 14-2

In their first game against Morris on Saturday, the Coaler baseball team had a Kodak moment in a 3-2 walk-off over the Redskins.
CC pitcher Payton Hutchings picked up his fifth win in as many starts, giving two unearned runs on five hits while striking out a season-high 14 and walking two.
The Coalers got on the scoreboard in the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.

Coaler tennis comes out swinging

    The Coal City tennis team was unable to beat Yorkville on Monday to fall to 2-2 overall, losing 5-0.
    Xander Smith got beat by Jon Waugh in the first singles match, 6-1, 6-3.
    Tyler Polarek was unable to handle Jake Devol in number two singles, taking a 6-2, 6-1 loss.
    Illya Dimitrijevich-Christian Overton were bested by Briggs Krempski-Sam Clough, 7-5, 7-6 (2).
    Zach Gagliardo-Tyler Johnson were unable to match up with Zack Nauman-John Gruber in a 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 loss.

Coaler tracksters stay in the race with the I-8 Conference

    The Coaler tracksters hosted Wilmington and Reed-Custer on Tuesday with the boys placing first with 86 points and the girls taking third with 25 team points.
    Finishing behind Coal City boys were Reed-Custer (58) and Wilmington (26). Coming in ahead of the Coal City girls were Wilmington (65) and Reed-Custer (69).
    Coal City’s Connor Skubic, Asa Cooper, Logan Miller, their 4x800 meter relay team, 4x200 meter relay team, Steven Aldridge and Connor Ulrich all got first place medals.

Coal City pitchers combine for shutout of Sandwich

    Coal City pitchers Keegan Gagliardo and Connor Best provided the one-two punch needed to shutout Sandwich, 7-0, Monday.
    Gagliardo (3-0, 0.88 ERA) went 4.0 innings, gave up just two hits while striking out six to get the win. Best finished the Indians the rest of the way, fanning six and walking one.
    The Coalers (10-2) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Jack Bunton and Austin Pullara came around to score on an error.
