What’s on your Christmas tree?

In 1966, Linda Wrightstone received a card from her boyfriend featuring a holographic bunny wrapped in Christmas lights. The card spelled love for the two, who eventually married.
Thirty years later the couple stopped by a Christmas shop where they spied an ornament that rekindled memories. It was of a bunny wrapped in Christmas lights.
Every year since, they have displayed the ornament and card on their Christmas tree. Without a doubt it is their favorite ornament.

Spencer moving back into a principal’s post

Coal City High School principal Mitch Hamann is set to retire at the close of the current school year.  In an effort to ensure a smooth administrative transition, the Unit 1 Board of Education has announced that associate principal Chris Spencer will fill the position when Hamann departs in June.
After several years in the dual role of principal for Coal City Elementary School and Early Childhood Center, Spencer assumed the duties of high school associate principal at the start of the current school year.

Unit 1 students, staff support monument makeover

In five days students at Coal City's Early Childhood Center consumed over 740 popsicles. The red, white and blue treats were sold to students with the proceeds going to support a makeover of the Community Veterans Monument.
Students at the elementary and intermediate schools also joined in on the popsicle fundraiser and with a little help from their teachers and school staff who paid $5 to wear jeans to work on a single day in November, the three buildings with some added help from the staff at Coal City Middle School raised over $2,000 for the cause.

     A real estate listing that caught the eye of an Illinois lottery winner landed a local Realtor on national television.
    In an instant, Jesus DeLon was a millionaire with plans to purchase a home and invest in an early retirement.
    The Kankakee resident won $4 million on a scratcher he purchased at the Casey’s General Store in Herscher, according to a press release the Illinois Lottery issued on the day he claimed his winnings back in early January.

UPDATED--Teens arrested after 60-mile chase

    As Coal City area residents slept, a car load of teens from Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood were rolling through the streets of town in a stolen Chrysler.
    During routine patrol early Tuesday morning, a Coal City Police officer observed a vehicle parked in the center of North Shabbona Street with its engine running and headlights on.
    The officer observed the vehicle had no rear registration plate, and as he approached a subject ran toward the vehicle got in on the passenger side and the car took off heading north down the quiet street.

Coaler senior bringing the joy of the holidays to nursing home residents

     A simple pair of socks inspired Makenna Crater to take up a holiday collection to ensure every resident at a local nursing home has a gift to open on Christmas Day.
    For the past five months Crater has been working as a CNA at Heritage Health in Dwight. That is where she will be spending her Christmas Day.
    So when her mom, Tamme, handed her the socks and encouraged her to give them to her favorite resident she couldn’t think of just one person.

Vigil provides a time for hope and healing

     An Angel of Hope stands in the center of Coal City’s Campbell Memorial Park, a place for reflection and remembrance, a symbol of hope for all parents whose children have become angels.
    The angel statue serves as a place for bereaved parents to find hope for peace and comfort for healing.
    The concept is taken from Richard Paul Evans’ best-selling book, “The Christmas Box,” in which an elderly woman grieves the loss of her daughter at the base of an angel monument.

Charges filed in theft of Miners money

Following a detailed investigation by the Coal City Police Department, a Grundy County grand jury handed down an indictment formally charging a former treasurer of the Coal City Miners Youth Tackle Football program with theft.
Bridget Hodina, 36, of Cape Coral, FL, is charged with theft of more than $10,000 but less than $100,000, a class 2 felony. A nationwide warrant was issued for her arrest, bond is set at $75,000.
