To celebrate the arrival of its new ambulance, the Coal City Fire Protection District kept with long standing tradition by wetting it down and pushing it into its designated spot in the apparatus bay.
It’s a ritual in the fire service to christen new apparatus with a wet-down ceremony, a practice that dates back to the 1800s when fire pumpers were pulled by horses.

Students score on statewide test

    Each spring, the Unit 1 School District administers a statewide assessment, an exam designed to measure academic progress. The results tell if local students are keeping pace with their peers.
    The results of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam are in and testing data indicates a large percentage of students in grades three to eight are meeting standards, and making academic strides.

Coal City man dies of suspected heroin overdose

     Grundy County Coroner John W. Callahan along with the Coal City Police Department is investigating the death of a 26-year-old as a result of a suspected heroin overdose early this morning, Monday, Nov. 12.
    Callahan was called to a residence in the 400 block of W. Oak St., for the death of Coal City resident James Lee. There was evidence at the scene that supports the use of heroin.

When Sydney Carlos takes the stage this weekend for Coal City High School's fall play it will be her first and her last.
Up until this school year, Carlos has only taken the stage for the school's musical productions, but for her senior year she tried out for something a bit different and landed a lead role in the show about a young woman with extraordinary powers.

New conference gets a name

      Coal City, Reed-Custer and Wilmington High Schools were founding members of the Interstate Eight Conference, but come next school year they're moving into a new conference, again as founding members.
    The new conference will be known as the Illinois Central Eight, a name recently approved by administrators representing the member schools.
    The Illinois Central Eight, not to be confused with the Central State 8, is comprised of the three local high schools along with Lisle, Peotone, Streator, Herscher and Manteno-all current members of the Interstate Eight.

Fewer parents attending annual conferences

   The dreaded parent-teacher conference, that time of year when adults meet face-to-face to discuss the academic and social progress of students.
    With the fall conferences wrapped up, the Unit 1 School District reports a 93 percent attendance rate for parents of students enrolled in kindergarten to fifth grade, but when it comes to middle and high schoolers the data points to a dramatic drop. In fact, parent attendance at the high school conferences this fall was just 21 percent.

World War I began in 1914, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and lasted until 1918. During the conflict, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (the Central Powers) fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States (the Allied Powers). Thanks to new military technologies and the horrors of trench warfare, World War I saw unprecedented levels of carnage and destruction. By the time the war was over and the Allied Powers claimed victory, more than 16 million people-soldiers and civilians alike-were dead.

Unit 1 Schools achieve top state ranking

    Exemplary is the designation given by the Illinois State Board of Education to the states’ top performing schools, and in all of Grundy County, Unit 1 is the only school district to have achieved the ranking.
    Statewide, 257 elementary schools, 47 middle schools and 67 high schools earned the mark of exemplary and that includes Coal City’s Early Childhood Center, Elementary School, Intermediate and Middle Schools.
    The designation was outlined in the recently released 2018 Illinois State Report Card that implemented a new process for rating school performance.

    Sarah Beach wears many hats—business owner,  village official, wife, mother and champion of the shop small movement—and she’s not alone.
    Beach knows dozens of local small business owners who, like her, wear many hats and support shopping local, because they understand the value it brings to a community.
    With the support of the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Beach has teamed with fellow business owners—Craig Smith, of Rolando’s Furniture and Appliance and Lori Bonarek, of Lori Bonarek Realty, to form the Coaler Business Alliance.
