What’s coming to the market?

It’s time for another Market Fresh on Broadway farmers market in Coal City.  
    The fourth market of the season is set for Saturday,  Aug. 18,  from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.  at Campbell Memorial Park, 580 S. Broadway. The market is hosted by the village of Coal City and Coal City Park Board. Market Fresh on Broadway is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    Locally grown produce, baked goods and handcrafted items are just a few of the items that will be available at this weeks market that welcomes a new produce vendor to the park.

Unit 1 charts future direction

It’s a blueprint for the future of Coal City schools.
    School leaders sat down last month to update the plan that gets everyone in the district working on a common set of goals.
    Developed through a collaborative process, the strategic plan not only sets the goals for the year ahead, but outlines objectives necessary for achievement.  Traditionally it includes four themes—health and human services, student learning, long range planning and Unit 1 community.

Use caution when heading back-to-school

School opens Friday and the Coal City Police Department reminds motorists to pay close attention to students as they walk and bike to school.
Motorists should be particularly alert around the early childhood center and elementary school where students are just starting to learn their route to school.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, an average of 131 Americans died every year in school transporation related crashes and 75 percent of crashes involve young pedestrians heading to and from school.

Hallway patrol

    Coal City Police officer Mike Imhof will patrol the hallways of Coal City High School this year as the department’s newest school resource officer.
    When it was announced earlier this summer that the village of Coal City and Unit 1 School District would expand the resource officer program from part-time to full-time and add an extra officer, Imhof put his name in for consideration.
    The patrolman was one of four officers to express interest and one of two who went through an interview process led by the police chief.

Demolition Day

In less than 10 hours a crew of skilled demolition experts took down the village of Coal City's oldest water tower.
As local residents looked on from various vantage points, Iseler Construction, dismantled the tower that has stood behind the village's police station for more than 70 years.
Approved in the first quarter of this year, Iseler had been working to get all of the necessary measurers in place to remove the water tower and that day came Monday.

Unit 1 invests over $500,000 in school safety

It's a busy time for the Unit 1 School District. As students and staff prepare for the start of a new school year, the board and administration are finalizing a series of plans and projects aimed at making its buildings safer for all who enter.
An aggressive school safety plan was presented several months ago and it continues to evolve. Just last week the Unit 1 Board of Education took action on two additional security measures that seek to protect students and ensure reliable communication in the event of an emergency.

Teens steal two cars in one day

Security cameras captured the moment two teenagers walked up to an unoccupied vehicle, got inside and drove away. It was one of two vehicles the pair stole that afternoon.
The scene played out just before 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 20 E. Division St. — the Minit Man BP gas station.
Coal City Police report the owner of a 2013 GMC Terrain parked near the entrance and left the vehicle running when they went inside the store.

Water tower set to come down

     Approved in the first quarter of this year, a contractor for the village of Coal City has been working to get all of the necessary measures in place to remove the water tower located at village hall.
    Due to the tower’s location, its removal is a complicated one which includes coordination with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad, Coal City Public Works Department and ComEd to name a few.

Hoffman development plan advances

     With an extension of its preliminary planned unit development proposal about to run out, Hoffman Transportation has submitted an amended application.
    Hoffman has been working with the village on the development of a rail-served warehouse and freight terminal located on the northeast side of Reed Road, just east of the Union Pacific rail line.

St. Juvin Post 1336 brings Christmas to Veterans in July

There sure wasn't any snow on the ground or any Christmas trees in evidence, but the Coal City Public Library District and St. Juvin Post 1336 brought some cheer to the residents of the Illinois Veteran's Home in Manteno on Tuesday, July 17.
The library began collecting donations of needed extras for the vets, things like snack foods, candy, jugs of punch and iced tea, bottled water with flavoring packets, personal hygiene items like toothbrushes and paste, deodorant, shower flip-flops, towels and men's clothing in mid June and the local community responded with generosity.
