Cullen to be honored with tree dedication

     A tree planted in memory of Melinda Cullen and her son, Jaxson will be dedicated this month.
    Cullen’s  former co-workers at ComScope Corporation purchased a tree to remember their friend following her unexpected death in March.
    At one time they all worked together in different departments at the Joliet company. The co-workers became friends who would meet monthly for lunch and to network, and even when a few moved on to other jobs they kept in touch, according to Loretta Miller, a former co-worker of Cullen’s.

Ride for the TaTa’s supports breast cancer research, support

It’s estimated 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed this year. To help those facing a new diagnosis, undergoing treatment and to support research initatives the TaTa Trot will host a fundraiser this weekend.
    The fourth annual Ride for the TaTa’s  is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 4. The cost to participate is $25 per bike/vehicle. Proceeds from the 135-mile journey will be presented to the American Cancer Society and Riverside Medical Cancer Foundation for breast cancer health and research.

    Safe, effective and sustainable is the company’s product mission, and at Norwex, its label doesn’t go on unless those criteria are met. So, it says something about what’s happening in Coal City when a global company puts its support behind a local project.
    The company that specializes in environmentally- friendly cleaning and personal care products is backing an expansion of the Hope Helps All-inclusive Playground in Coal City’s Lions Park. They are donating $25,000, specifically for the purchase of a sensory tunnel that will include the company’s logo.

The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a bank robbery that occurred on Wednesday, July 25 shortly after 3:45 p.m. at the First Midwest Bank, 128 Depot St. in Gardner.

European adventures: Academics, athletics take Campos sisters across the Atlantic

The Campos sisters — Hillary and Leah — will never forget their college years, especially the opportunity afforded to them to travel overseas.
A senior communications major at Illinois State University, Hillary spent the spring semester studying in Florence, Italy. Her younger sister, Leah, a sophomore at Wartburg College, traveled to London, England and Paris, France with her school's softball team at the close of the semester.
The Wartburg Softball team played two games against The Great Britain Select and two games against the national team of France.

Another cop to patrol Unit 1 Schools

It's not official just yet, but the village of Coal City has agreed in principle to provide the Unit 1 School District with a second school resource officer.
As part of its new school safety action plan, the Unit 1 Board of Education budgeted to hire two school security officers. But plans changed after a meeting with village officials.
Unit 1 Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg said the board was adamant that security be increased in district buildings with the addition of security personnel to supplement the services provided by a part-time school resource officer.

First week-night market to hit Broadway

 The community and vendors asked and the farmers market committee agreed it was time for Market Fresh on Broadway to expand with weeknight markets, and the first of two for the season will open at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 26.
Just days after a successful season opener, the market tents will go back up in Campbell Memorial Park as close to a dozen vendors return with their home grown vegetables, custom craftworks and handmade treats.

For as long as anyone can remember, the Wills Family has been growing sweet corn on its farm and the summer harvest is offered to the community at a modest price.
On warm summer afternoons Elvin Wills could be spotted selling ears by the dozen from the back of his pickup truck with at least one of his grandchildren helping out.

Coal City, Diamond post water restrictions

    The villages of Coal City and Diamond are reminding residents that the watering of lawns, washing cars and filling swimming pools are restricted to certain days of the week due to municipal ordinance.
    The watering schedule allows Coal City residents with even numbered addresses to water on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and odd numbered addresses on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. There is no watering allowed on Saturday, the highest water usage day of the week.
