Water/sewer rates going up in Coal City

The bad news for Coal City water users is they will pay more starting April 1. The good news is the increase is not as much as it was the last time a rate adjustment was needed.
The village board approved an ordinance March 13 establishing a 2.50% increase in water and sewer rates after being faced with a 7% increase the year before. Each year the village reviews water and sewer rates to estimate how much is needed to keep the utility account solvent.

Police seeking tips on hit-and-run that killed woman near Braceville

The Illinois State Police (ISP) Division of Criminal Investigation is requesting the public's assistance in the investigation surrounding the death of 23-year-old Destiny Dixon of Galesburg, IL
Dixon was killed on Jan. 1, at approximately 7:30 p.m., during a fatal hit-and-run traffic crash on Interstate 55 northbound near Braceville, in Grundy County. A vehicle crashed and rolled over on Interstate 55, and the driver was trapped inside his vehicle.

Coal City increases base pay for teachers to be competitive

Coal City District Unit 1 will pay teachers a starting salary of $47,500 after an unanimous voted by the Board of Education.
The base salary increase from $46,686 will make the district competitive as it anticipates the need hire teachers for the 2024-2025 school year.
Superintendent Chris Spencer said Coal City is among the top 4 best-paying districts in the area which he hopes will attract new teachers.

Spring Road closed through March 18

Spring Road between Broadway Street and the Union Pacific Railroad in Coal City, will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through March 18.
Work has not been planned during the weekend, and the road will remain open for school buses, garbage trucks and emergency vehicles. Access to driveway entrances will be maintained in the area throughout the workday.
There will be times when driveways, especially those on the north side of Spring Road, will be blocked. Affected residents will be notified prior to blocking so vehicles can be moved.

Plunging for a great cause

Over $135,000 was raised during the annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics of Illinois on Saturday when 500 plungers took a dive into the lake at Braidwood Rec Club.
This is the third straight year the Braidwood club offered it's beach for plungers and despite the bone-chilling water, everyone seemed to have fun.

Godley Park District’s gymnasium will transform into a prom boutique this weekend to prepare for the influx of hundreds of local high school girls and their parents searching for the perfect formal dress.
This Saturday, March 2, marks the 11th year of Melissa’s Closet and Crystal’s Jewelry Box, an annual event held to provide girls with prom dresses for just $5, as well as jewelry, shoes and purses to complete their look.
Over the years the organization has helped dress 4,500 girls at an affordable cost for one of the biggest days of their high school careers.

The student body at Coal City High School joined the Grundy Area FFA organization in celebrating National FFA Week last week.
FFA is a youth-led career and technical education organization focused on the many aspects of agriculture.
The Grundy Area Chapter is comprised of students enrolled in the Grundy Area Vocational Center’s agriculture course taught by Brandy Biros. The course is taught at Coal City High School.

Coal City to wrestle for championship!

Back-to-back victories for the Coal City wrestlers means they'll get their shot at defending the 2023 Class 1A state dual team title at 6 p.m. tonight (Saturday).

On Friday they upended Riverdale 54-13 in the quarterfinal round and this morning they took care of Vandalia 42-22 to advance to the championship match at Grossinger Auto Arena in Bloomington.

Village approves TIF funds for Riverside sewer line

The Village of Coal City will commit $201,219 from its TIF Fund to help extend sewer services to Riverside Healthcare’s Coal City clinic on Route 113.
Riverside Healthcare is planning to double the size of its Coal City campus by adding a second story to its existing clinic, a 10,000 square-foot addition, while expanding its parking lot and adding a second entrance off Carbon Hill Road.
The construction will bring more jobs as Riverside adds more health services like oncology and infusion, physical therapy and cardiac diagnostics and rehabilitation.
