Braidwood City Council begins broadcast of public meetings

Residents in Braidwood who want to check in on the happenings of the City Council but cannot make it over to City Hall twice a month will have a new option to tune in.

On Tuesday evening, the city initiated its first Facebook Live for official meetings of the council, an effort that city leaders said is to promote transparency in local government.

City Administrator Tony Altiery said when the city first looked into broadcasting meetings, they had issues with their available equipment tying together the video and audio.

Movement on the ground, but little else, for Ultimate Rides

The planned site for Ultimate Rides in Braidwood has seen some action over the past few weeks, as crews for the car dealer have been to the Hickory Street site leveling the lot.

But, a date when construction can begin for the anticipated new building has yet to be picked.

“We’re meeting with them in the next week, and hopefully we can get them at the [March 22 City Council] meeting to show a rendering of the project,” Braidwood City Administrator Tony Altiery said this week.

Road project the latest issue for heated debate among Braidwood city leaders

For the past two years, when the state of Illinois has calculated Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) funding to local road districts, additional funds have been added on for municipalities across the state, as part of the Rebuild Illinois local bond fund.

Rebuild Illinois is the state’s $45 billion bipartisan capital plan that passed in 2019. Included in the plan was the bond fund that sets aside a total of $736 million over six years for municipalities, earmarked for additional local roads projects.

Braidwood earns spot in CMAP future planning

The city of Braidwood will look to put pen to paper to create a new vision for economic and residential development within the city’s borders.

On Jan. 25, city engineer Dave Weber told members of the city council that Braidwood had received a grant from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) to assist in the creation of a new comprehensive plan.

It will be the first update of the city’s plan in 18 years.

Braidwood resident calls foul on snow removal process

A resident on Braidwood’s south side wants the city to start clearing the roads near his house, a job he said isn’t getting done with each snowfall.

Tim Collofello lives on Freeman Lane in Braidwood, just past the Comet Estates subdivision.

He said that when it snows, city street crews not only neglect to plow Freeman Lane, but will also block access to the street by dumping snow there.

“It’s not a private road, it’s a city street,” Collofello said. “They need to plow it clear to the end of the street, not just wherever they feel like stopping.”

City leaders aim to reconcile Braidwood Motor Fuel Tax fund

The city of Braidwood needs to clean up its books when it comes to available dollars and road work.

City engineer Dave Weber told members of the council on Jan. 25 that over the past two years, the city has been working with IDOT to clear up some issues with the Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) fund.

Weber said that over the course of the past four fiscal years, the city has made a total of $378,252 in payments from MFT that were not actually authorized to come from that account.

Townes of Braidwood agreements officially inked

The city of Braidwood has signed off on a contract with plans to continue developing residential properties inside the once drama-plagued Townes of Braidwood subdivision.

In December, members of the city council approved an ordinance to allow for a development agreement between the city and Ensure Construction, which is owned by Mike Guinta.

With two commissioners missing and a short agenda, the Braidwood City Council finished out the calendar year with a quick nine minute meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 28.

Commissioners James Mikel and Ronald Cockream were absent, with Commissioners Doug Money and Fay Smith and Mayor Bob Jones providing a quorum to complete the meeting.

On the agenda was an ordinance authorizing the disposal of personal property owned by the city of Braidwood.

Braidwood to seek $1.7M in property taxes

The city of Braidwood has passed its annual tax levy, seeking $1.7 million in property tax funding for the current fiscal year.

Each year, the city of Braidwood and all public taxing bodies adopt a tax levy estimate, outlining a plan to allocate operating funds via anticipated property taxes.

Of the levied monies, $554,649 will be earmarked administration costs in the General Fund. The General Fund is the city’s main operating fund for administration and police protection, however, police protection is appropriated separately.

Braidwood extends Waste Management contract

The city of Braidwood has extended its contract with Waste Management for one year, guaranteeing the disposal service until 2022 as the city works to seek a new contract.

The City Council approved the contract extension during the regular monthly meeting on Dec. 14.

“We’ll do an RFP (request for proposals) this year and go out for bids, and see what we can do with our garbage pickup,” city administrator Tony Altiery said.

The extension of the contract will increase monthly refuse by about $1, to $23.76.
