Beautification projects planned for Braidwood

The city of Braidwood is pushing forward with its Beautification Committee, despite a brief delay.

On July 13, City Clerk Adam Beaty updated members of the City Council on plans to create the committee and get started on some projects.

“We plan to get some of Main Street looking really nice from about the railroad tracks to Division, to get the fire hydrants painted, just some general projects to get the town looking much nicer, more appealing to businesses,” he said.

Late on your water bill in Braidwood? Get ready to pay a fee

Residents in Braidwood have gotten a break on their late water bills over the past year. But, like all good things, it’s coming to an end.

On July 13, city administrator Tony Altiery told members of the City Council that the city would reinstate those overdue fees

“The late fees on water bills are coming back again starting the next billing cycle,” Altiery said. “Water bills are due on the 15th, after the 20th — we give you a five day grace period — we will be implementing a $20 fee again.”

Smith eyes changes on Walker Street

Braidwood’s Streets and Alleys Commissioner said he wants to get organized for roadwork repairs utilizing the city’s Motor Fuel Tax (MFT) funds.

And, he said, he’d like to start with Walker Street.

Commissioner Fay Smith discussed the issue with members of the City Council on June 22.

Braidwood City Council back to full staff

The city of Braidwood has a full city council once again.

On June 22, Mayor Bob Jones and the city’s commissioners approved the appointment of Ronald Cockream to serve as Commissioner of Public Buildings and Property.

Last month, Finance Commissioner Wayne Saltzman tendered his resignation, effectively immediately.

Two weeks later, former Public Buildings and Property Commissioner Doug Money also resigned, and was then reappointed to fill the remainder of Saltzman’s seat, leaving his commission open.

Novy Road safety discussion returns to Braidwood City Council

A Shadow Lakes resident was back before the Braidwood City Council last week, determined to have a safety issue on Novy Road addressed.

Wayne Kancler is the president of the Shadow Lakes Homeowners Association. In May, Kancler approached the board asking if the city could look into possibly adding a railing along a section of Novy Road that borders one of the lakes inside the private subdivision. Kancler said the section of road poses a safety risk of someone were to accidentally leave the roadway, with a sudden drop off into the lake.

Braidwood still working on paperwork for Ultimate Rides

It’s been nine months since Ultimate Rides first came to a meeting of the Braidwood City Council, announcing their intention to move the automotive business from Coal City to a new home in Braidwood.

But so far, construction has yet to begin at the site.

City Administrator Tony Altiery told members of the City Council on June 8 that the delay in bringing Ultimate Rides to Braidwood is on the city’s end, not the business.

Paperwork a sticking point for new Braidwood hire

Controversy over a new hire in the city of Braidwood’s streets department continues to be the dominating topic at regular meetings of the City Council.

On June 8, City Clerk Adam Beaty called the hire an issue that has “plagued the city” for the past month.

What it comes down to, city leaders said, is an HR concern.

“I’m going to be frank, I’m tired of it,” Beaty said. “I’m trying to do things right in this office.”

Commissioner swaps seats in Braidwood

The city of Braidwood has filled the vacancy that was left when Commissioner of Finance and Accounts Wayne Saltzman resigned his post in May.

But, there’s still a vacancy left to fill to complete the five member board.

Doug Money resigned his post as Public Buildings and Property Commissioner prior to the regular meeting of the City Council on June 8.

Then, during that meeting, Money was nominated to fill the vacancy left when Saltzman resigned last month. The appointment was approved by a 3-0 vote.

Braidwood seeks residents for beautification committee

The city administrator in Braidwood is looking for some ways to spruce up the town.

And, he’s looking for the public’s help to make that happen.

Administrator Tony Altiery announced that he is putting together a beautification committee at City Hall. Altiery made the announcement during the May 25 regular meeting of the City Council.

“We want to move forward with a beautification committee, so if anybody is interested in getting on the committee, they can contact me at City Hall and we can move forward with this,” he said.

Issue over new hire grows more intense in Braidwood

A feud among members of the Braidwood City Council over a potential new hire for the city’s streets department got a little murkier last week, following the sudden resignation of Finance Commissioner Wayne Saltzman.

Saltzman resigned effective immediately on May 24, after missing the prior council meeting.

Saltzman was in charge of the city’s finances when this fiscal year’s budget was passed, which included a street department budget appropriation of $389,768, including total salaries in the amount of $196,168.
