Post 1336 teams with Ace, NHS to place flags on graves of US soldiers

In recognition of the men and women who gave of themselves to serve in the armed forces, and to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for their country, St. Juvin Post 1336 Veterans of Foreign Wars took steps to ensure the graves of these heroes were decorated with an American flag.
On Friday, May 10, 10 members of the Coal City High School Chapter of the National Honor Society and their faculty sponsor Cathy Lyons placed U.S. flags on the identified graves of veterans resting at Braceville Gardner Cemetery.

Best in years: The morel explosion is real!

The morel mushroom crop this year is being called exceptional because of ideal growing conditions, and although we’re just past peak, you can still find this flavorful funky fungus out in the woods.
Morels are generally oblong with a honeycombed cap, and both stem and cap are hollow inside. They can range in color from creamy yellow to gray and can grow bigger than a softball.
If you’re in love with the taste you probably don’t care that morels are loaded with antioxidants and vitamins and are high in protein and fiber — that’s just a benefit.

The School Board last week voted to seek bids for materials and concrete for the next school year’s building trades class project house. It’s an investment in an education in the skilled trades, and in the right market, can even turn a profit for the district.

Mini farm gets council OK

The City Council brought four acres of farmland into the city limits last week, and agreed to allow the property owner to build a barn before he builds a house.
The council held a public hearing to accept comment on the zoning change and variances last week. The property owner, Tyler Issert, asked to annex four acres of land to the city. He sought agricultural zoning to maintain the agricultural use of the property.
Two more acres that Issert owns were already in the city limits with residential zoning. He asked the city to rezone it agricultural.

Turnabout is fair play

Ten eighth graders took a day off of school on Tuesday, May 14. But the students were still learning a lot that day, thanks to the annual Turnabout Day event with the city, police department, and fire department.

Turnabout Day is an annual event in the city of Braidwood, where eighth grade students from Reed-Custer Middle School get a chance to shadow local officials and learn what it takes to keep the municipality up, operating and safe.

Coalition will find a new home in Braidwood

The Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) has had a major impact on the area over the past decade, sponsoring teen programs, anti-drug and anti-smoking efforts, and art therapy, as well bringing about awareness and pushing education efforts to fight illicit use of drugs and alcohol.

Now, the group will seek out a new home, with plans to blossom into a safe space for the community at large.

Custer Fire responds to first major incident

The Custer Fire Protection District (CFPD) has been up and running for less than two weeks. But the new emergency responders have already had their first major incident response, with a complicated yet successful extrication.

On May 9, just before 9 p.m., the CFPD responded to a crash near Route 113 and Gray Road. Upon arrival, responders found a vehicle off the roadway in a wooded area, with the driver — the lone occupant — trapped beneath the car.

Upon initial patient contact, the crew of CFPD Engine 29 performed life saving measures while preparing to begin extrication.

Lareau is a hometown hero

In April 2017, the 100th anniversary of the U.S. entry into World War I, St. Juvin Post 1336 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Coal City Public Library District partnered to honor veterans by displaying local veterans' uniforms and memorabilia just inside the library main entrance.

Halliday begins second term

Raising his right hand, Terry Halliday agreed to faithfully discharge the duties of village president for another four years.
His first term certainly had its challenges, namely a powerful EF-3 tornado that struck the village just one month after he took office. Working closely with the village administrator, Halliday and the Village Board led the community through the days and months that followed as residents, businesses and the village itself rebuilt what the storm blew down.

Coal City to hire another patrol officer

A request by Coal City Police chief Tom Best to expand his patrol division was granted by the village’s Board of Trustees, but the process of getting a cop on the street could take several months.
A letter outlining the village’s plan to add an officer to the police force has been sent to the town’s Police and Fire Board, directing the three-member commission to move forward with the hiring process.
