Unit 1 to host summer camps

The Unit 1 School District will host a series of youth and high school athletic camps this summer.
The various camps will be held at Coal City High School. The cost to attend is $35 for in-district students and $40 for out-of-district students, unless otherwise noted.
Programs will begin next week as summer weight training for high school students gets underway Monday, June 3, and continues until July 25. Weight training will be held from 7 to 9 a.m. in the high school weight room Monday through Thursday. The cost is $25 per student.

That’s what she did last Thursday, when she received a robocall allegedly from the Social Security office. The recorded message said there seemed to have been an error in her account, and the Social Security office needed more information.
If she didn’t provide the information, her Social Security checks would be terminated.
“They’re trying to get elderly people to hit the panic button and give out information,” she said.
She didn’t panic. She hung up.

Bingo-Palooza heads to the park this weekend

The Braidwood Lions Club is kicking off summer with an exciting night out, all for a good cause.

On Saturday, the Lions will hold a six-hour “Bingo-Palooza” fundraiser underneath the Lions’ Pavilion in the Old Smokey City Park. The event will take place June 1 from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Proceeds will be used toward the purchase of new playground equipment for the Lions’ Kiddie Park on North Lincoln Street in Braidwood.

New liquor commissioner appointed

The city of Braidwood has a new liquor commissioner.

Earlier this month, the members of the City Council approved the appointment of an outside member to hold the role, which normally falls under the jurisdiction of the mayor.

Frank Meents Law Firm, a private firm located in Channahon, was unanimously approved to fill the role throughout the term of Mayor Bob Jones.

Former Commissioner Jim Hutton passes away

A recent long-serving commissioner in the city of Braidwood has died.

James Hutton passed away on Sunday, May 26, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Hutton served as Public Buildings and Property Commissioner in Braidwood for 12 years, beginning in May 2007 and running until April of this year.

He was one of five candidates vying for this year’s mayoral term, but was beat out by current Mayor Bob Jones.

More than 100 people came out on a breezy and pleasant morning to pay tribute to veterans who sacrificed for the United States.

The Braidwood American Legion Koca Post 39 again hosted the annual Memorial Day Ceremony at the ReedzTownship Veterans Memorial in Braidwood on Monday, May 27.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the American Legion, and also the 100th anniversary of the Braidwood American Legion Koca Post 39.

Sorensen appointed Wesley Road Commissioner

Unrelenting rain, a budget to write, supplies to purchase and equipment to repair hasn’t kept Wesley Township’s new road commissioner from getting out and making the township’s byways a little safer and a lot more comfortable to drive on.
Travis Parsley, who was elected to the position two years ago, submitted his resignation effective May 7. During its regular meeting last Tuesday, the Wesley Township Board selected Jeff Sorensen as his replacement and swore him into office.

Memorial Day parade Saturday

The Wilmington American Legion Lester J. Smith Post 191 will be hosting the annual Memorial Day weekend parade on Saturday, May 25, to honor those men and women who served in the U.S. armed forces. The parade steps off from Stevens Intermediate School, at the corner of Ryan and Kankakee Street, at 11:30 a.m.
The parade will march south on Kankakee Street to Kahler Road, then north on Williams to end at Veterans Memorial Park, at the corner of Vine and Williams.
