Coalition aims to recruit more members

The Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) has a new home. Now, members are working on plans to continue their outreach efforts in the community.
The coalition moved into its new home in the plaza behind CVS on Reed Street on June 1, and held an open house for the community to inspect the new space on June 3.
Members said the new site could be advantageous, with its close proximity to Reed-Custer High School and Middle School.

DAR Good Citizen named

Midewin Prairie Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution recently named Alyssa Faurot as the DAR Good Citizen for Reed-Custer High School.
DAR Good Citizens are based on scholarship, leadership and service to school and community.
One graduating senior may be honored. The student must meet grade standards and submit letters of recommendation, as well as an essay, “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It.”

David Ziebell looked at his potential new employers and asked them if they were sure they wanted to start this kind of business at their age. Because it’s a lot of work.
The answer was yes, and the result is Route 66 Old School Brewing, which will celebrate its grand opening this weekend.
Everywhere Steve and Tina Nelson went in the last few years they’d visit the local brewery, and noted things they liked at each one. They’d chat with customers and bar tenders and ask what they sell.

School support staff gets a raise

The salaries of the school district’s support staff will increase by nearly 10 percent over the next three years, under an agreement ratified by both the School Board and the union.
The School District 209-U Board of Education approved a three-year contract for the district’s support staff during a special meeting last Thursday. Support staff includes office, food service, library and custodial staff in each building.

Lane closures and shifts on I-55 at Grant Creek, tracks

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that replacement of the bridge decks and other improvements to Interstate 55 over the BNSF Railroad tracks and Grant Creek, south of Blodgett Road in Wilmington, will begin, weather permitting, Monday, June 17.
In order to complete the project, northbound I-55 initially will be reduced to a single lane to accommodate the widening of the shoulders.

Small Town Theatrics to stage musical concert

In celebration of its 10th season Small Town Theatrics will present its first semi-staged concert featuring the Tony Award nominated score of “Once On This Island.”
The one-act musical based on the Rosa Guy novel “My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl” tells the story of a peasant girl who brings people of different social classes together using the power of love.
Saved by the gods from a disastrous flood that washes across her Caribbean island, a young peasant-orphan girl who comes to be known as Ti Moune is adopted by a couple who finds her in a tree.

Local industry hires summer interns from area high schools

Morris Hospital held a kickoff breakfast to formally recognize and congratulate the 43 students selected for the 2019 Grundy County Internship Program.
Nikki Wills, Business Director of the GEDC opened the event by thanking the businesses, students, and educators in attendance.
Dr. Kenny Lee, Superintendent of Minooka Community High School, and Erin Murphy-Frobish, Vice President of Human Resources at Morris Hospital, also addressed the students and discussed the benefits and opportunities that will be afforded to them as part of this program.

Community dinner needs a cook

A cook is needed for the Community Thanksgiving dinner, and if one can’t be found the event will be shelved for a second year.
The idea for a community dinner was conceived by a local resident who wanted to treat individuals who were financially struggling. For six seasons a traditional Thanksgiving meal was served to anyone who showed up on the Sunday prior to the November holiday.

The village of Coal City hasn’t thrown the towel in on a program that could provide much needed funding to fix up neighborhoods.
