Public comment rules change

A series of training sessions between municipal attorneys and the village of Coal City’s Planning and Zoning Board has led to changes in the rules that govern public comment during open meetings.
Village attorney Mark Heinle reported the sessions brought to light a number of topics from the statutory authority and jurisdiction of the town’s advisory bodies, to sign regulations and potential zoning regulations in regards to recently approved state law regarding recreational cannabis.

Selling chances for a weekend getaway, conducting a 50/50 drawing, holding a queen of hearts or a poker run? You’ll need a license for that.
In fact, any raffle that results in a prize being awarded will require a village license, and one will be available now that the Village Board has adopted a set of rules governing the process of conducting a raffle within the village limits.

A green light for Oak Street construction

The on-again, off-again project to extend Oak Street west of DiPaolo Drive is back on.
Last week, village trustees agreed to sign on to a revised property dedication agreement with James A. and Douglas J. Ferdin, a decision that advances the town’s plan to construct a missing portion of Oak Street thus extending the roadway from DiPaolo Drive to Ann Street.
The extension was outlined in the Coaler lift station improvement project approved by the Village Board in March and later pulled out due to a shortage of immediate funding.

Grand Marshal honors for the Huttons

The Hutton family have been awarded the honor of Grand Marshal for the 38th Annual Summerfest Hometown Pride Parade. Angie Hutton will carry the memory of her late husband Jim with her while she and her family lead the parade through the streets of Braidwood July 21. “Mr. and Mrs. Hutton were nominated for their years of dedication to the City of Braidwood, their passion for community service and involvement with numerous community events, beautification projects and humanitarian efforts for those in need,” Josh Bolatto of the Braidwood Lions Club said in a statement.

No injuries during vehicle fire

No one was injured after a vehicle caught fire in the 800 block of West Bergera Road 7:30 p.m. Monday.
The daughter of the owner of the 2003 GMC 1500 walked outside to lock it after previously driving it when she noticed smoke coming from the vehicle.
That’s when the calls started coming in, Braidwood Fire Chief Barry Eggers said.
The fire was originally called in as a structure fire because of its proximity to a garage. Braidwood, Elwood, Coal City, Morris, Gardner, Braceville and Wilmington responded.

Meeting not duly posted, council cancels

A change in administrative staff caused Braidwood City Council to cancel its June 25 meeting, reported its attorney Bryan Wellner in an official statement. A special makeup council meeting was held Monday night.
According to the statement, the City Council failed to post the agenda for the meeting on its website 48 hours in advance, as mandated by the Illinois Open Meetings Act.

Some new laws taking effect; others already in place

SPRINGFIELD – Starting Monday, July 1, it will officially become illegal in Illinois for anyone to sell or provide tobacco cigarettes or other tobacco products to people under age 21.

The so-called “Tobacco 21” bill, House Bill 345, which Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed into law April 8, is one of several new laws that will take effect on July 1, the start of the new state fiscal year.

It prohibits anyone from selling or providing cigarettes, electronic cigarettes or any other “alternative” tobacco product to a person under age 21.

The first wave of tax increases that will pay for the state’s $45 billion capital infrastructure plan will take effect Monday, July 1, pending Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s signing of a pair of bills.

Motor fuel, cigarettes and e-cigarettes will become more expensive should Pritzker sign Senate Bills 1939 and 690 as he is expected to do.

The most direct tax for consumers will be the 19-cent increase to the motor fuel tax which will help fund $33 billion in spending on transportation projects such as road and bridge repairs and public transit.
