Two new businesses for downtown Wilmington

A new craft store and a boutique have made their initial soft openings in downtown Wilmington, just in time for Catfish Days.
The Crafter’s Gallery will hold its grand opening July 27, while Le Fleur De Lis Boutiques & Antiques plans to hold its grand opening in the fall.
Located at 115 N. Water St., The Crafter’s Gallery is at the location of the old Tenn’s Store. It has been open since early June.
Walking into the rustic, but modern-feeling, store, the first thing customers are greeted by is a friendly golden doodle named Zoso.

DEAD TREE? City wants it cut down

Wilmington Mayor Roy Strong wants to review and strengthen the city’s ordinances pertaining to property maintenance. Specifically, he wants to be able to force property owners to remove dead trees before they fall in the public way.
A tree fell across South Water Street in a strong storm late last month, blocking the state highway for several hours and tying up emergency services and public works staff in the response.

Officer just seeks compliance

Dan Brimer feels bad for his neighbors when he hasn’t been able to get his grass mowed. Although he understands sometimes it rains on the only day a fellow has to mow, he really works hard to ensure Wilmington residents do their best to keep up with lawn maintenance.
Officer Brimer is the Wilmington Police Department code enforcement officer. He works primarily on outside appearance – it’s things like tall grass, junk and abandoned vehicles that get his attention.

Market Fresh on Broadway open for the season

Locally grown produce, jams, sauces, gourmet popcorn and handcrafted gifts are just a few of the items available at Coal City’s farmers market—Market Fresh on Broadway.
The first weekend market of the season is set for Saturday and organizers have scheduled a day of activities to be highlighted by the goods available from 10 vendors.
Hosted by the village of Coal City and Coal City Park Board, Market Fresh on Broadway will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Campbell Memorial Park, 580 S. Broadway.

Coal City makes park donation official

Hope Helps’ all-inclusive playground has officially been turned over to the village of Coal City.
A resolution accepting the donation of four new pieces of playground equipment, as well as accessory items included in the Phase II expansion, were accepted by the village board last week.
Brittney Kaluzny, founder and president of the non-profit autism awareness organization, was on hand as village trustees approved the document that outlines in detail the donation of more than $150,000 in park equipment

Monument renovations complete

On July 8, Christian Micetich marked the completion of renovations to the Community Veteran's Monument, an effort started last fall as his Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout community service project.
Micetich planned the improvements, raised money and solicited donated labor and material for upgrades to the monument including new sidewalks, coating the base, and installation of two additional black granite panels on the south face to accommodate additional veterans' names.

Tearing down the house

The single family home on the southwest corner of Broadway and Gordon Avenue will be coming down in the weeks ahead and in its place a parking lot for downtown shoppers.
Late last year, the village of Coal City purchased the property at 160 S. Broadway with the intent of having the home removed to make way for a future parking lot. The plan is the town’s way of replacing street parking that will be lost in the reconstruction of South Broadway.

Dinner fundraiser to support backpack program

Hard to believe that in America one in six children live in hunger and more than 12 million reside in food insecure homes. Right here in Illinois, Feeding America reports 17.3 percent of children under age 18 live in homes with limited or uncertain availability to nutritious food.
Statistics like these are known all too well by three local volunteers who stepped up five years ago to keep a supplemental food program going in the local community.

No gaming for gas station

Video gaming machines in gas station convenience stores might be a trend, but it’s one that won’t be happening in Coal City as long as Terry Halliday is mayor.
A request for a liquor license to be issued for the exclusive purpose of enabling video gaming in a gas station was turned down by the Coal City Village Board when it met last week.

‘A Safari Adventure’ coming to Braidwood

Bring your adventurous spirit with you this weekend to “A Safari Adventure” in the Braidwood City Park for the 38th Annual Braidwood Lions Club Summerfest.
The carnival, beer garden, concessions and more start Thursday evening. Thursday will also host a live remote broadcast and giveaways from 103.1 FM WCSJ at 5 p.m. and the Christian Life Assembly Church photo booth from 5 p.m. until dusk.
In the evening, musical entertainment will kick off with ’50’s and ’60’s rock ’n’ roll classic music from The Route 66 Band at 7:30 p.m.. They will be sponsored by Kozol Bros, Inc.
