Grant awarded to Help for Hope

Help for Hope has been chosen as a recipient of a $1,000 grant celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Community Foundation of Grundy County. The mission of Help for Hope is to bring hope to those in need by providing basic life necessities to anyone; regardless of age, income, or residency.

Ride for the Ta Ta’s event is Saturday

It’s estimated that more than 266,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed this year. To help those facing a new diagnosis, undergoing treatment and to support research initiatives, the Ta Ta Trot will be riding for the ta ta’s.
The fifth annual Ride for the Ta Ta’s is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 3. The cost to participate is $25 per bike/vehicle with proceeds from the 110-mile journey to benefit the American Cancer Society and Riverside Medical Cancer Foundation.

City to buy lot on North Water, cheap

The city will acquire another parcel on North Water Street to enlarge a proposed parking lot, and for minimal cost.
The city purchased 212 N. Water St. in March, for $40,000, to create additional public parking. When discussion about the purchase from the Jeffries family trust began last year, it was believed that the vacant lot to the north was included.
But the Will County Supervisor of Assessments’ website listed the parcel as belonging to Midwest Capital Investments LLC, with a Joliet address, so it could not be part of the deal with the Jeffries family.

I-55 traffic backups about to get worse

Construction-related traffic backups on Interstate 55 have been bad this summer, but they’re about to get worse.
Contractors for the Illinois Department of Transportation are replacing the decks of the bridges carrying I-55 over Grant Creek and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad tracks in Wilmington Township, just north of North River Road. The work is included in IDOT’s 2018-2023 Proposed Highway Improvement Program.

Heated discussion creates tense atmosphere at council meeting

Discussion of the budget created high tension in the council chambers during the Braidwood City Council meeting on July 23.
Central to that was discussion regarding the budget in the administration department.
“We’re looking to do some budget cuts in all departments. There’s no line item for city administrator. That comes out of the administration and we can’t afford that,” Finance commissioner Wayne Saltzman said during his report.
“Good luck,” Mayor Bob Jones said in response. “By the time we come up next time, we’ll have a list for you.”

Therapeutic day school opening in space of former Reed-Custer Primary School

This fall a school for students with alternative and special needs is opening in the building that once served as the Reed-Custer Primary School in Custer Park. The Godley Public Water District will still use the building during off hours for community programs.
The water district acquired the space in November 2017. On June 1 it formally leased space to Camelot Education for the company for a therapeutic day school.

I-80 patching in Joliet this weekend

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that bridge deck patching and pavement repairs on westbound Interstate 80 between Briggs Street and the Des Plaines River bridge in Joliet will require lane closures, weather permitting, from 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5.

In order to complete the work, westbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane through the work zone. Motorists should expect significant delays and allow extra time for trips through this area.

One dead in fiery interstate crash

Northbound Interstate 55 south of Lorenzo Road in Wilmington is closed until further notice while the Illinois State Police investigates a five-vehicle crash that killed one driver and seriously injured another.

The crash occurred at milepost 239.5 on Thursday, July 25, at approximately 5 p.m.

Seven aspiring leaders attend FBLA workshop

The Coal City High School chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) sent seven members to the organization’s annual summer leadership workshop in Springfield.
An energetic conference provided opportunities for members to network with students from across the state and sparked the students with many new ideas and provided them with the time needed to plan activities for their local chapter in the coming school year.
