GEDC hosts intern recognition dinner

Parents were on hand to celebrate the successes of their sons and daughters as the seventh Grundy County Summer Internship Program came to a close.
An internship recognition dinner was held July 30 to formally recognize and congratulate the students who participated in the paid, hands-on internship program.
Nancy Norton, president and CEO of the Grundy Economic Development Council (GEDC) opened the event by welcoming the businesses, educators, parents and students. Senator Sue Rezin introduced the company representatives along with their interns.

Tattoo parlors and recreational vehicles

Coal City’s Planning and Zoning Board is charged with many tasks, from reviewing new residential and industrial development, to ensuring a business has adequate parking. This week it took up tattoo shops and recreational vehicle parking.
As town planners set to recommend a series of code amendments to the village board, it has determined a need to add tattoo shops as a conditional use within the town’s commercial zoning code.
Where such businesses could be located was the main topic of discussion on the issue.

Coal City looks to limit truck traffic

Anticipating there will be increasing truck traffic coming into the village of Coal City, town officials initiated a plan to establish designated truck routes.
It’s been two years since that discussion first took place, and it appears the village board is finally ready to establish designated truck routes. A vote is scheduled for Aug. 28.

Reed-Custer District 255 summer improvements

Once students leave the school doors when that final bell rings in late spring, preparation to ready the building for the following school year begins.
A few changes and improvements have occurred in Reed-Custer District 255 schools since May in order to prepare for the 2019-2020 school year which starts Aug. 14.
A new gymnasium floor at the high school is one that most students will notice right away during their physical education classes or athletic practices.

Exhibit at Fossil Ridge Library features resident’s involvement in historic NASA mission

Twenty years ago, history was made when NASA successfully achieved the orbit and landing of the first man-made object on an asteroid during the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) Shoemaker mission.
Now, on display at the Fossil Ridge Library is an exhibit featuring a Braidwood resident’s work on that mission and her accomplishments during her years working for the world’s most renown space agency.

Mikki’s Diner owners take over Main Street Pizzeria & Grille

New owners have acquired the restaurant and bar on the corner of Main Street and Washington Street in Braidwood, and they might just be familiar to many local residents.
Owners of Mikki’s Diner in Wilmington, Michelle Boyd and Jimmy Boyd, purchased Main Street Pizzeria & Grille from Ragan and Donna Fay in April, and they have been running the restaurant and bar since April 15. The day after the Fays’ ownership ended, the Boyds came in and opened the kitchen the next day.

Work zone down to one lane in each direction for bridge repairs, inspections

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that the Interstate 55 work zone over the BNSF Railroad and Grant Creek, south of Arsenal Road in Will County, will be reduced to one lane in each direction, weather permitting, prior to the morning rush hour Monday, Aug. 5. The work zone also will be extended during the day for the next two weeks to accommodate routine inspections of the I-55 bridges over the Des Plaines River.

Pavement patching on I-80 in Joliet this weekend

The Illinois Department of Transportation is reminding the public that bridge deck patching and pavement repairs on westbound Interstate 80 between Briggs Street and the Des Plaines River bridge, in Joliet, will require lane closures, weather permitting, from 11 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5.

In order to complete the work, westbound I-80 will be reduced to one lane through the work zone. Motorists should expect significant delays and allow extra time for trips through this area.

South Wilmington woman killed in crash

A single vehicle rollover crash claimed the life of a 25-year-old South Wilmington woman.
Grundy County Coroner John W. Callahan announced late this afternoon (Thursday, Aug. 1) the death of Sabria Walski who was involved in a crash that was discovered earlier in the day.
Preliminary investigation indicates Walski’s vehicle was traveling northbound on Campus Blacktop, when for some unknown reason, left the roadway, traveled through a ditch and came to rest in a bean field located just north of Livingston County Road.

Local Girl Scout takes a trip of a lifetime

This summer, Coal City High School graduate and Girl Scout Savannah Middleton took a trip of a lifetime.
She spent two weeks stepping out of her comfort zone, immersing herself in a different culture and meeting new people who speak a different language in Costa Rica as part of the Outward Bound Costa Rica (OBCR) program.
Middleton completed a 15-day course called “Catching Waves” where she learned how to surf, helped clean up Dominicalito and Uvita beaches, as well as got an education on coastal development, tide pools, overfishing, culture, traditions and ecotourism.
