Petition filing dates for March General Primary Election

Grundy County Clerk Kay Olson announced that established political party Grundy County candidates wishing to appear on the March 17, 2020 General Primary ballot may begin picking up petition packets from the County Clerk's Office, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 8 a.m.
Candidates may also download the packets from the county clerk's website at www.grundyco.org, under Election Information, and may also request a petition packet by e-mail, by contacting the clerk's office at elections@grundyco.org .

Coal City granted $96,000

The state’s Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity has informed the village of Coal City it will receive $96,000 in state funds to construct public restrooms at Lions Park.
Village administrator Matt Fritz said the funding will provide the dollars necessary to construct a new ADA compliant restroom facility adjacent to the Hope Helps All-Inclusive Playground.
“That will be a nice addition to the park,” Trustee Dan Greggain said upon learning the requested funds had been granted to the town.

Geekin’ on 66, a family-friendly “geek fest” hosted annually since 2017 by Chic, Geek & Antique, is headed to downtown Wilmington this Saturday, Aug. 31.
So what does it even mean to be a geek?
“To be a geek is a celebration of my knowledge and expertise of pop culture, my love of video games, my love of comic books,” Thommy Evans, owner of Chic, Geek & Antique said.

North side locked down during manhunt

You’ve heard it said a dozen times since last Wednesday; they came to the wrong town. Two young men from Calumet City are in custody now, after carjacking a car in the south suburbs, leading police on a high speed chase, crashing in Wilmington, taking off on foot and finally being hunted down by police officers who weren’t going to stop until the suspects were in custody and the town was safe. The teens, both age 17, allegedly carjacked a Ford Taurus at gunpoint in Calumet City on Tuesday, Aug. 20, just before midnight. The stolen vehicle was spotted by Dolton police, who gave chase.

City restricts parking on Ridge Street

City officials are accepting comments on proposed stop signs, and made some extensive changes to parking zones near the high school last week.
• No parking — the council created a new no-parking zone on the south side of Ridge Street from South Kankakee Street to Wildcat Court. During the Water, Sewer, Streets and Alleys Committee meeting on Aug. 14, Third Ward Alderman Ben Dietz said the problem is that people park on both sides of the street, and then the two-lane road is down to one lane.

Students recognized for achievement in trap shooting

Three Reed-Custer students were recognized at the Aug. 21 School Board meeting for their outstanding achievement in the Illinois State High School Clay Target League state tournament.
Superintendent Mark Mitchell awarded the athletes with certificates in front of the Board of Education.
The members of the trap shooting club participated at the league state championships in Bunker Hill on June 1, where they all earned rankings of fifth place or higher in their divisions.

Enrollment slightly down in Reed-Custer schools

Enrollment numbers have decreased from last year in the Reed-Custer School District.
The district reported 1,357 students enrolled in its three schools as of Aug. 23, which is down by 52 students from the 1,409 students enrolled on the same day in 2018.
At Reed-Custer High School, the number of students enrolled decreased by only three, with 473 students enrolled in 2018 compared to 470 students this year.

School budget anticipates nearly $1 million surplus

The Reed-Custer School Board is preparing to put the stamp of approval on another year of spending in the district, and the tentative budget shows a nearly $1 million surplus.
On Aug. 21 , Superintendent Mark Mitchell presented the Board of Education with the tentative budget for the 2020 fiscal year (FY20), which began on July 1 and runs through June 30, 2020.
The budget includes total spending for FY20 at $25.7 million with expected revenues at about $26.7 million, leaving the district with $960,973 in surplus.

Paving set to begin next week

D Construction, the contractor for the South Broadway reconstruction project, is scheduled to begin hot mix asphalt paving on Tuesday, Aug. 27, weather pending.
Residents on the west side of South Broadway will not have access to their driveways during working hours (approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) during paving operations. Residents are asked to have their vehicles moved by 7 a.m. on Tuesday to the side streets or alleys.

Both suspects caught after carjacking

Both suspects involved in a carjacking and 50-mile police chase to Wilmington have been caught.

That's as of 9:50 a.m.Wednesday after a five-hour manhunt that had Wilmington residents on high alert and officials cancelling school.
