Rainy forecast couldn’t wash out car show

Car enthusiasts rolled in the beginning of the end of summer at the Braidwood Area Historical Society’s 8th Annual Car Show at the Depot on Saturday, Aug. 17.
Approximately 25 people brought their vintage or high-end cars, and eight trophies and 23 door prizes were given out during the evening.
Typically the annual BAHS-hosted car show draws anywhere between 40 to 70 cars.
“We had a good turnout, even with the threatening weather,” George Kocek, president of BAHS, said.
Despite the uncertain weather forecast, the rain did hold off during the event.

Armed robber in custody minutes after crime at truck stop

Will County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to a report of an armed robbery in progress at the Knights Inn/River Road truck stop on Lorenzo Road in Wilmington early Sunday morning, and took the perpetrator into custody.
Deputies arrived at the truck stop at 4:33 a.m. A male attendant told they he had just been robbed by a masked gunman.

County Executive Walsh will not see re-election

JOLIET – Will County Executive Larry Walsh announced today that he will not seek a fifth term as leader of one of the fastest growing counties in Illinois. Walsh, who has spent his entire adult life in public service, has decided to retire and spend more time with his wife, Irene, six children, and 20 grandchildren.

Classrooms are prepped, backpacks are packed and school is back in session for the 2019-2020 school year.
Six new teachers are joining the Reed-Custer community this fall, bringing with them a range of experience and strengths.
Some of the teachers have taught different grade levels at Reed-Custer schools previously or started during the middle of the school year, while others are completely new to the district.

New pastor comes to Ignite Christian Church

Last month, Ignite Christian Church in Braidwood gained a new senior pastor.
Jeff Whittum became the non-denominational church’s new pastor in July after the previous pastor, John Costa, stepped down from his position.
Whittum, 36, comes to Ignite after serving as the pastor at Phelan Acres Bible Church in Wilmington.
He was called to the service of ministry in his mid- to late-20s.
“I felt a strong connection with my faith and a desire to share it with others,” Whittum said.

District spends $300,000 on improvements

Students are back in class this week, and they’re walking into buildings that have been scrubbed, painted and polished over the summer. But in addition to making everything sparkle, staff and contractors tackled some much needed repairs and improvements.

St. Rose School will see changes under new principal

St. Rose Parochial School in Wilmington is welcoming a new principal at the start of the 2019-2020 school year, who is helping to usher in improvements to the school.
Nancy Schwab will be taking over the role as principal from Linda Bland, who retired at the end of the 2018-2019 school year.
In her position as part-time principal, Schwab will oversee 75 students from pre-k to eighth grade, as well as nine teachers and one paraprofessional.

Davis family makes $10,000 donation

On behalf of their family, Steve and Cindy Davis presented a check for $10,000 to the Board of Education Monday, to establish the Davis Endowment for Math and Science.
Three generations of the Davis family have attended or are attending Wilmington schools, from the patriarch Lewis Kelly Davis to Steve and Cindy’s grandchildren, who will attend classes in three of the district’s four buildings this year.

Coaler athletes develop leadership skills

The Coalers with Character program was organized to improve the leadership and character traits of the district’s student athletes. The CCHS program got its start last summer with instruction on how to utilize leadership and character to become a role model. As a teacher, coach and sports fan, Brad Boresi knows that people young and old look up to athletes from all levels. He and fellow educators wanted to provide local athletes the tools they need to be successful on the playing field, but also in life. That includes the ability to make good choices.

Dresden Station hosts merit badge clinic

Scouts earned hundreds of merit badges Saturday at Dresden Station in Morris, where the nuclear energy facility hosted more than 400 people from throughout the region in a day-long, hands-on STEM Merit Badge Clinic.
The opening ceremony kicked off at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 10, at the station, located at 6500 N. Dresden Road, and continued throughout the day. It’s the seventh year in a row for the partnership between Dresden Station and Boy Scouts of America, which draws scouts from surrounding towns and much of northern Illinois as well as Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
