Officer Schwartz sworn in by mayor

    The city of Wilmington Police Department has another new officer, who was sworn in by Mayor Roy Strong last week and presented with his badge and departmental identification card.
    Officer Jacob Schwartz was introduced to the City Council during its rescheduled meeting on April 3. He comes to the city with a bachelors degree in law enforcement and justice administration from Western Illinois University.

Kids to hunt for eggs on South Island

    The Easter Bunny is expected to make an appearance at the Wilmington Lions Club’s annual Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 13.
    There event is for children through age 12, who will search for eggs in four age groups; 2 - to 4-year-olds, 5- to 7-year-olds, 8- to 10-year-olds and 11- and 12-year-olds.
    Raffle prizes will be awarded in each age group, and the Lions will serve treats. The event and the raffle are free, but children should bring their own baskets to hold their finds and their prizes.

FBLA qualifies 5 for nationals

Coal City High School’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) advanced five members to the organizations’ national leadership conference during the 70th annual State Leadership Conference.
Members, advisors and guests from chapters across the state participated in the 2019 conference held April 5 and 6 at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield. The two-day conference, with “Create, Lead, Inspire” as the theme provided members an opportunity to expand their business skills and compete in over 60 competitive events.

Unit 1’s new approach to financial forecasting

As outlined in its strategic plan, the Unit 1 Board of Education set a goal to develop a long-range financial document, one that specifically takes into account the financial role played by Exelon Generation.
Over 60 percent of the district’s tax base currently comes from Exelon’s Dresden Nuclear Generating Station, the annual amount of tax paid according to an agreement the power generator entered into with the school district and six other taxing districts.

Cody Rogers has portrayed a host of characters: from a sweet baby bear, to a devious innkeeper, and now he’s taking on the role of Jesus.
The Coal City High School junior who’s appeared in multiple school and community theatre productions has been cast in his church’s Holy Week production of “The Living Last Words,” a dramatic musical based on Jesus’ seven last words from the cross.

Unit 1 Board finalizes end of year calendar

Don’t worry students, summer break is less than two months away now that an official last day of school has been set.
At its meeting last week, the Unit 1 Board of Education announced that Friday, May 31, will be the last day of school for students. Teachers and staff will report the following  Monday, June 3, for a teacher institute day.

Coaler athletes honor hall of fame coach

As the monthly meeting of Coal City High School's Coalers with Character got underway in the school's Performing Arts Center, Lenny Onsen took a seat toward the front of the room ready to answer questions about the summer weightlifting and conditioning program, but he never had the chance.
Unlike Onsen, the student-athletes in attendance were well aware the topic of discussion had nothing to do with weightlifting and everything to do with the popular teacher and coach.

Spesia retains seat on Coal City Village Board

David Spesia, who was appointed to the Coal City Village Board in March 2018, has been retained by village voters.
Spesia garnered 58.86 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s consolidated election to fulfill the remaining two years of the term vacated by Justin Wren.
Spesia was challenged by Georgette Vota, a former village trustee and current chairperson of the town’s Planning and Zoning Board. The unofficial vote count has Spesia with 196 and Vota with 137.
Voters in the village of Coal City also cast ballots for president (mayor), village clerk and trustee.

Will County election results

            The following vote count reflects the unofficial total for Will County with 100 percent of precincts reporting. It includes vote by mail ballots received before the central count on March 31.

Election day results will be verified in a retabulation on April 8. Vote by mail ballots mailed after the central count and postmarked no later than April 2, and valid Provisional ballots cast on Election Day will be added on April 16.

The April 2, 2019 Consolidated Election results become official on April 23. An asterick (*) marks the apparent winner in each race.

New council will face mounting debt, deficit crisis

A five-way mayoral bout was just one of several strongly contested positions this election. All five of Braidwood’s commissions were up for grabs, and each candidate held strong positions and campaigned heavily throughout the city over the past few months.

But no matter who comes out on top after this week’s election results are certified, the new council will have one shared task – tackling the city’s monstrous debt.
