Godley Water District gets permit to tap river

The Godley Public Water District has moved to the next step in the process to pull water from the Kankakee River.

In 2017, the district filed a joint application with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency to obtain a permit to withdraw water from the Kankakee River.

Coalition looks to target tobacco use

The members of the Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) are working to get out the word on dangers associated with tobacco use, especially in the era of electronic cigarettes.

During this month’s regular meeting of the BAHCC, members discussed to current bills making their way through the state legislature in Springfield.

Indoor trap range a go

Leon and Christy Baine are on target to construct an indoor trap shooting range in the village of Diamond.
The couple approached the village last fall with a proposal to construct and operate a trap shooting training and competition facility. Last week the Village Board gave the project its stamp of approval.

Unit 1 policies on-line

The Unit 1 Board of Education is implementing a new service making it easier for the public to access district policies.
Unit 1 Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg recently announced the new on-line board policy link is active and can be accessed through the district’s website at www.coalcityschools.org. The policy manual can be found under the board of education tab located under the district tab on the homepage.

WPD to watch for distracted drivers

It may just be a dip of the head, but police officers know this as a sign of a distracted driver. And the next time you try to see who just sent a text while you’re behind the wheel, could be the time you get caught and ticketed.
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, and the Wilmington Police Department is partnering with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police, and more than 100 local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to remind drivers to drop their phones or pay up.

City water users asked to complete two surveys

    The city water department needs property owners to help the city meet state mandates and more importantly, ensure their drinking water is safe.
    Two surveys were mailed to residents and business owners in March. One seeks information about the potential for cross connections, the other wants to identify the type of piping entering the building.

District 209-U School fee increase limited to textbooks

    Textbook rental fees for the next school year will increase by $5, but all other fees will remain the same.
    Following a policy that was instituted six years ago, the Board of Education approved the slight annual increase in textbook rental fees during its Wednesday, March 13 meeting. Only book fees will increase. Fees for preschool and extra classes in middle school, such as shop, art, and science will not increase as they had in the past.
    The school fees for the 2019-2020 school year are as follows:
    • Preschool - $50
    • Grades K-5 - $115

Route 102 bridge replacement to start this month

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that a bridge replacement project on Illinois 102 over Rayn’s Creek, southeast of Wilmington, will begin, weather permitting, April. 22.

Rayn's Creek is located northwest of Old Chicago Road, near the Butterfield family farm. It was constructed in 1929 and reconstructed in 1972. It is inspected annually. The Rayn's Creek bridge superstructure is rated at 3 out of 100, with significant section loss. It is considered intolerable by today's standards and a high priority for correction.

Motel owner accused of promoting prostitution

A long-term investigation has ended with the arrests of two people with close ties to one of Braidwood’s most recognizable landmarks.

On March 28, Braidwood police made two arrests on felony charges at the Sun Motel along I-55, recognized across the country as the famed hotel in the movie “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”

Braidwood Police arrested Vinodchandra “Vinny” Patel, the listed Sun Motel owner and a resident of Des Plaines, for promoting prostitution, a class 4 felony.
