Street repairs set for fall

With fall in full swing, the city of Braidwood is working to get road improvement projects completed before winter rolls into town.

On Sept. 26, city engineer Todd Gereaux gave an update on work planned for October and November.

    Tully Garrett and Holly Barker shared some bad news on Facebook Monday. The couple had been very open about their hope to purchase and restore The Launching Pad drive-in, and had many supporters on social media that included the local historical society, city officials and tradesmen — even visitors from the Netherlands.
    But as the workweek opened, they learned that the sale listing had been pulled, and that the property is no longer active. And residents are saying that a potential new owner wants to have video gaming there.

City pursues dam modifications

    The city of Wilmington continues its fight with the state of Illinois to keep its river dam while finding ways to prevent any more drownings.
    Mayor Roy Strong told the City Council and the public last week that he plans to erect a fence on and north of the parapet wall for a distance of 50 feet so nobody can enter the water from those areas. Six of the nine people who have drown at the dam since summer 2006 entered the water from the wall or just below it.

School District falls in legal debt margin

    School District 209-U has received a clean opinion of its financial statements for fiscal year 2017. Among the findings, said auditor Laurie Pope, CPA, from Mack & Associates, is that the district has fallen within its legal debt margin.

Coaler Homecoming is underway

    It’s Homecoming week at Coal City High School and a host of activities are planned to celebrate the Coalers.
    The week started with students and staff showing up in their grass skirts and tropical themed attire for Hawaiian Day. Tuesday was designated as Decade Day with an emphasis to incorporate yellow into their attire to recognize September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.
    Tuesday also served as the Coaler Volleyball team’s annual Megan Bugg Night in honor of their classmate and former teammate.

Entries sought for Octoberfest parade

    The GFWC-IL Coal City Junior Woman’s Club continues to take entries for this year’s Octoberfest Parade, to be held Saturday, Oct. 7. The theme for the 32nd annual fall festival is “Jump into Fall.”
    The parade is free to participate, with the exception of political parties/candidates who are required to pay a $25 fee. The fee is per political person, not per political party.

Post 1336 presents Patriotic Citizen award

St. Juvin Post members presented the Post's Patriotic Citizen Award to Kay and Franklin Brtva. The award is “Given in grateful appreciation for unselfish inspirational patriotic service to the community through the daily display of our National flag.”
Kay and Franklin split their time between their residence at Country Meadows in Diamond where they fly the US flag on their privately provided pole and their winter home in Florida.

Stadium project nears completion

Coal City High School’s stadium renovation project is wrapping up just in time for the Coalers Homecoming football game, one month behind the original construction schedule.
District officials were informed in late July that construction of a new concession, restroom and storage facility would be delayed by nearly a month pushing its opening back to mid-September.
The news out of the superintendent’s office this week is the facility should be ready in time for Friday night’s game against the Plano Reapers.

Municipalities going for Kankakee River water

    Municipal leaders from several communities are joining forces with the Godley Public Water District to create a water planning area.
    “The village of Coal City has been one of a number of communities trying to find the best means of intergovernmentally cooperating in a way that would make the best of the local water resources available,” said Village Administrator Matt Fritz.

Coal City’s truck route plan meets opposition

     An anticipated increase in truck traffic through the village of Coal City has prompted town leaders to look at the establishment of truck routes, but the proposal under consideration has been met with some resistance.
