Post 1336 honors surviving spouses of Vietnam War

     St. Juvin Post 1336 Veterans of Foreign Wars is a commemorative partner with the Department of Defense’s 50th Commemoration of the Vietnam War.
    As part of its role in the program, Post 1336 is honoring the surviving spouses of local military veterans who were enlisted between Nov. 1, 1955 and May 15, 1975, regardless of the location where they served.
    Post 1336 has presented surviving spouses with a personalized Certificate of Honor and commemorative pin provided by the Department of Defense.

Community wide garage sales this weekend

    Residents in the village of Coal City are setting up for this weekend’s community-wide garage sale.             A variety of items are for sale as locals are looking to get rid of clothing, books, furniture and other household items. If you are looking for Skylanders, a sleeping bag, snow ski, Kiss collectibles or holiday decorations,  the community-wide sales are the place to find those items and many more.

FPA prevails in Open Meetings claim against WIPD

    The Free Press Advocate was correct in its claim that the Island Park District Board of Commissioners violated state law during a special meeting.
    Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s Public Access Counselor agreed with the newspaper’s position that the Park Board had not properly notified the public that it would vote to fill a vacant seat on the board during a special meeting held on April 21, and that the board improperly discussed procedures during its closed session, both in violation of the Illinois Open Meetings Act.

Feds reject Great Lakes Basin Railroad

    The Great Lakes Basin Railroad has been derailed. Last week, the Surface Transportation Board rejected Great Lakes Basin Transportation Inc.’s application to construct and operate the rail line around the Chicago metropolitan area through counties in Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana.
    “GLBT has failed to provide the board with accurate financial information upon which the board can rely to make a determination on the transportation merits of the project,” stated the STB’s Aug. 30 decision.

Homecoming 2017 will be out of this world

As the school year gets into full swing, Reed-Custer students are taking the time to welcome back those who once passed through the halls of RCHS.

This is Homecoming week. And the theme for Homecoming 2017 – Comet Space Jam.

While this year’s homecoming comes earlier than usual, the students managed to keep up with the planning process, setting up a memorable week for students and alumni.

Civil rights lawsuit against city continues

A civil rights violation lawsuit against the city of Braidwood alleging misconduct surrounding the 2015 mayoral election has received a split decision in federal court.

Bob Snedeker, who threw his hat into the mayor’s race in December 2014, filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court, Northern District of Illinois, Eastern Division, in November 2016, with an amended complaint filed in February of this year.

Two arrested in Island City Storage burglary

On Saturday, Sept. 2, at approximately 5 pm, Brett A. Hartell, 18 and his friend – a 17 year old male, both of Elwood — were
arrested while attempting to flee the scene after burglarizing the Island City Storage facility on North Kankakee Street in Wilmington.

The burglars were found in possession of multiple tools that they stole from the business.

STB rejects Great Lakes Basin Railroad

On Wednesday, The Surface Transportation Board (STB) issued a decision on the application by the Great Lakes Transportation, Inc. (GLBT) to construct and maintain a railway.

The STB found the GLBT failed to provide the Board with accurate financial information upon which the Board can rely to make a determination on the transportation merits of the project as required. The financial information provided in GLBT’s application, as supplemented, is fundamentally flawed, making it impossible for the Board to determine whether GLBT can meet the statutory criteria.
