Comets pick up first win of season, defeat tourney champs: Newark

    Reed-Custer’s varsity boys basketball team came up short in their final game of the Seneca Turkey Tournament on Saturday, losing 66-65 to St. Anne in a heart-breaker
    The Comets were coming off a one-point win over the tourney champions, but couldn’t get the same outcome in their final game, ending the tournament with a record of 1-3.

Lady Comets comeback comes up short

    Following the Beecher Ladycat Classic, the Reed-Custer varsity girls basketball team kicked off regular season action on Monday, traveling to Seneca.
    Things did not go as planned for the Lady Comets as they wound up falling to the Irish by nine points, 56-47.
    “The third quarter was the problem for us,” said R-C coach Nick Klein. “Only managing to score two points was too much to overcome, although we outscored the Irish 20-8 in the fourth.”
    Reed-Custer (2-4 overall, 0-1 conference) had two weak quarters, which caused the eventual loss.

Comets hurt themselves during season opener

    Reed-Custer probably wishes it could take back their first quarter during Monday night’s game against Spring Valley Hall in the Seneca Turkey Tournament.
    The Comets looked nothing like the team that fans and parents have come to know, as they made mistake after mistake, digging themselves a hole early
    By the end of the first frame, Reed-Custer faced a 23-point deficit, getting outscored 29-6, and couldn’t climb out as they lost their season opener to the Devils, 80-56.

Comets matmen back with plenty of experience

    Reed-Custer sent two wrestlers to state last season. While the two Comet matmen didn’t medal, they are back and ready to leave their mark again this year.
    As a team, the last time Reed-Custer won a regionalwas 2009-10. That’s what happens when you battle powerhouses Coal City and Wilmington. It also didn’t help that the Comets didn’t always have wrestlers at every weight level.

Lady Comets face stiff competition in Ladycat Classic

    The Reed-Custer varsity girls basketball team closed pool play with a loss in the Beecher Ladycat Classic on Monday, finishing up with Bishop McNamara.
    The Lady Comets wound up falling to the Irish, 47-32.
    Reed-Custer came out slow in the first half, falling to a 28-14 deficit by half-time.
    The Lady Comets tried to get back in it but Bishop Mac went on a 10-5 run in the fourth quarter to win it for good.
    Kylie Balgemann picked up her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

Comets to rely on full roster of experience

The Reed-Custer boys basketball team has put together a string of successful seasons, and expectations are high to have another as they return with another strong roster.
    Last year was the first in the past five years that the Comets didn’t reach the Regional championship, but their goal is to get back there and not settle with that plaque.

Lady Comets out to build upon a winning season

    For Reed-Custer’s varsity girls basketball team, last season was a step in the right direction and they will be looking for repeated success this year.
    The Lady Comets finished last year with an overall record of 18-14 (7-4 conference), an improvement over 2015, where they went 14-17 (5-6 conference).
    Much of that production came from graduates Val Guzman and Kenna Wilkey. But the Lady Comets are looking to make up for those two big holes, and continue their winning ways.

Lady Comets fall to Seneca in Regional

    Reed-Custer’s varsity volleyball team saw their season come to an end on Monday, as they were pitted in a battle with Seneca during the opening round of the Regional.
    The two teams traded blows during the regular season, as they picked up one win and one loss against each other.
    Unfortunately for the Lady Comets, Seneca got the last laugh, defeating Reed-Custer in two games, 25-21, 25-19 in at contest played at Wilmington.

Comets host Manteno Friday for last game

    With Reed-Custer’s varsity football team hosting their final game of the season on Friday, the Comets have the chance to finish on a positive note in front of a Senior Night crowd.
    “We want to have fun, stay together as a family, and put our best foot forward,” said Comet coach Mark Wolf. “We want to try and get a win, that is the name of the game in varsity football. You have to put your best foot forward and do everything you can to come out on top.”

Comets looking for Touchdown Club officers

    With Reed-Custer’s football program nearing the end of the season, the Comets are looking for new parents to take on board member roles for next year’s Touchdown Club.
    The club, in its third year, raises funds for the football program outside of the Reed-Custer Athletic Boosters. Money raised helps the Comets travel to a yearly summer college camp, along with scholarships for graduating athletes.
