Lady Comets fall to Peotone in Regional

    Reed-Custer’s varsity girls basketball team saw their season come to an end during the first round of the Regional on Wednesday, falling to Peotone, 39-30.
    The Lady Comets hung close with the Blue Devils throughout the first three quarters, but ran out of steam in the final frame, getting outscored 11-3 to surrender the win.
    Up to the point, Reed-Custer kept pace with Peotone, facing a one-point deficit at the end of one, but both teams recorded five in the second and 10 in the third.

Comets drop tough one in Riverton Shootout

    Reed-Custer’s varsity boys basketball team made a trip to the Riverton Shootout this past weekend to compete against a tough Wethersfield team.
    The Comets got off to a hot start to jump ahead 21-14 by the end of the first. By the second quarter, Wethersfield garnered some momentum to gain a 39-35 lead heading into the locker room.
    The third quarter saw Reed-Custer fall a little father behind, and were down by 16 points at one point. The Comets started to mount a comeback though, only trailing by eight near the end of the third quarter, 61-53.

Reed-Custer teen collects funds for shooting victims

Police in Kentucky continue to investigate a shooting at a school in the small town of Benton in January.

Two students were killed and 18 injured when a teenage gunman opened fire at Marshall County High School on Jan 23.

The shooting took the lives of Bailey Holt and Preston Cope, both 15.

A 15-year-old Marshall County High School student has been charged in the shooting with two counts of murder and 12 counts of first degree assault.

The incident made an impression on a local 15-year-old, who decided to do something to help.

The flu season is only several weeks old, but already it’s likely to be one of the worst in recent history.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported last week that hospitalizations for influenza this season are the highest seen, even higher than the 2014-15 previous high season. Flu activity continues to increase across the U.S., resulting in crowded hospitals and spot shortages of antiviral medications and rapid influenza tests.

At highest risk for the flu, the elderly, people with compromised immune systems and children.

Local wrestlers prepare for grind in loaded Sectional

    The road to Champaign won’t be easy for Wilmington, Reed-Custer and Coal City wrestlers as they head to a loaded Olympia Sectional this weekend.
    The Sectional boasts 30 state-ranked individuals, including four state-ranked teams, with three of them coming out of the Coal City Regional. Those teams include Coal City, Prairie Central, Clifton Central and Clinton.
    To put it in perspective, there are four areas for the Sectional, including Olympia, Oregon, Vandalia and Chicago Hope Academy.

    A good week of practice paid off for the Reed-Custer wrestling team as they entered one of the toughest regionals in the state on Saturday.
    The Comets in the same boat as all of the other teams, as they battled through one of the toughest pools in 1A, qualifying four wrestlers for the Sectional, which will be held in Olympia on Saturday.
    “We are sending four: Gabe Nagel, Ryan Shepherd, Shane Milburn and Logan Zacharias,” said Comet coach Jeff Sukley. “Bobby Mann and Austin Sunday are alternates.”

Comets drop fourth quarter against Westmont

    Reed-Custer’s varsity boys basketball team continus to improve, looking night-and-day compared to their first conference game.
    That was put to an example on Friday night, as they hung close with the number two team in the I-8, Westmont. While Reed-Custer ultimately fell to the Sentinels, 78-70, the game was close in the end.
    In fact, the Comets held a lead for most of the game, before falling behind in the fourth quarter off a 28-14 run from Westmont.

Lady Comets split final two games of regular season

    Coming off a dominating win over Momence, the Reed-Custer varsity girls basketball team was looking to win their final game of the regular season against Westmont Thursday but came up short, 56-52.
    Reed-Custer will enter the Regional, where they will be looking to right the ship with a first-round win against Peotone on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Braidwood. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was moved due to weather causing a Monday cancellation in the Regional.

Coalers win wrestling regional

There's no place like home and the Coal City wrestling team will attest to that after winning their own regional Saturday to advance nine to the Olympia Sectional.

The Coalers out-distanced Fairbury 205.5-181.5 to claim the dual team regional plaque to qualify for the Gibson City Dual Team Sectional.

Before their dual team run, the Coalers intend to take care of business Saturday when they field nine qualifiers in the individual sectional at Olympia.
