R-C track teams are up and running

    Reed-Custer’s varsity track team held their second coed meet of the season on Saturday, competing against nine other teams.
    The Lady Comets took fourth place with 46 points, finishing behind Seneca (121) New Lenox (84) and Sandwich (66.5).
    The boys team placed fifth with 51 points, finishing behind Prairie Central (93), David Speer Academy (71), Streator (68) and Sandwich (61).
    Starting with the girls team, Jaden Christian was the only Lady Comet to win a first place, doing it twice.

Seven seniors will lead strong Lady Comet line-up

    Reed-Custer will be trying to go deeper into the postseason yet again this year, this time hoping to get past the Sectionals.
    The Lady Comets picked up their third Regional title in the past four years in 2017, but fell to Beecher in the Sectional semis. In the end, Reed-Custer finished with a 19-15 overall record (8-8 conference).
    Reed-Custer will see the return of Ramsey Harkness as the head coach, entering his fifth year with the program. He will be joined by assistant coaches Chris Van Degraft and Alex Bitto.

Comet face mixed roster of experience heading into baseball season

    One of the challenges facing the Reed-Custer baseball team will be a young roster. However, with youth comes new talent, and the Comets will certainly not be lacking any of that in 2018.
    “We will be fairly young with only five seniors on the 15-man roster,” commented coach Jake Evans said. “Our strengths will include depth on the pitching staff though, and a versatile team filled with good athletes that can play multiple positions.”

Lady Comets ready to get kicking

    Reed-Custer’s varsity girls soccer team will open its season March 13 against a familiar foe, Wilmington. It’s a team they look forward to meeting.
    That because a year ago the opened against the Lady Wildcats with a 6-0 victory. It was a nice way to start the season.
    The Lady Comets finished the season with an overall record of 3-13 (2-6 conference), and two of those three wins were against Wilmington,

RCHS aims to offer trap shooting for students

    The Reed-Custer Board of Education approved offering trap shooting as an extracurricular activity for high school students last week.
    Within two days of the board’s meeting, 15 students want to join.
    “I am excited that the Board of Education voted to approve participation in the Illinois High School Clay Target League,” said Superintendent Mark Mitchell. “Our students have a wide variety of interests, so we try to offer as many opportunities as possible.”

    Life just got a little easier for the Reed-Custer boys and girls track teams.
    The Comets will move down from 2A to 1A, meaning they will compete in the postseason against teams of comparable size.
    “After two years competing up in Class 2A, we are back in Class 1A this year, which gives more of our guys a more realistic chance to advancing to State and medaling,” said Trenton Roth, Reed-Custer’s track coach.

Comet season comes to a close

    The Reed-Custer varsity boys basketball team saw their season come to an end on Wednesday, falling 62-54 in the opening round of the regional to Seneca.
    The loss came just five days after the Comets beat Seneca in the final game of the regular season. Reed-Custer defeated the Irish that Friday, 74-60.
    Unfortunately, they just couldn’t keep the momentum going in the postseason, struggling to really get their offense going from the second quarter on.

Is there an issue with wrestling postseason?

    The state individual wrestling tournament is complete leaving us dissatisfied.
    The IHSA may not have a problem deciding who and where regional and sectional tournaments are held, but how teams were assigned this year shortchanged some of the best wrestlers.
    “I do feel the postseason set up is not working, and the IHSA needs to make improvements,” said Reed-Custer coach Jeff Sukley. “How is the big question.”

Page carries Comets to victory on eve of regional

    The Reed-Custer varsity boys basketball team got a welcome lift Friday as they prepare for Regional action, as they secured a conference win on the road against Seneca, 74-60.
    Reed-Custer took a lead in the first quarter, but it was the second half that put the score out of reach for the Irish.
    The Comets held a two-point lead at halftime, 33-31, but continued their pace in the second half with a 20-point third and 21-point fourth quarter.

Comets matmen unable to qualify individuals for state

    It was a disappointing day for Reed-Custer’s varsity wrestling team Saturday, as the Comets came up just short of sending some individuals to the state finals in Champaign.
    All four of Reed-Custer’s wrestlers in the Olympia Sectional wound up suffering losses just one match outside of reaching the semfinals, missing state qualification by one match.
    Logan Zacharias (285) was probably the closest to making it to the State Farm Center, as he kicked things off with a 27-second pin in the opening round against Josh Cerna from Monmouth.
