Charges filed in theft of Miners money

Following a detailed investigation by the Coal City Police Department, a Grundy County grand jury handed down an indictment formally charging a former treasurer of the Coal City Miners Youth Tackle Football program with theft.
Bridget Hodina, 36, of Cape Coral, FL, is charged with theft of more than $10,000 but less than $100,000, a class 2 felony. A nationwide warrant was issued for her arrest, bond is set at $75,000.

Lawsuit filed against Reed-Custer school district claims "culture of abuse" in football

A lawsuit has been filed against the Reed-Custer School District, stemming from allegations of hazing and abuse during the pre-season of Comet football in 2017.

Winter weather makes its debut

Winter may officially be  three weeks away, but Grundy County residents got an early blast of snow and cold early Monday.
The first flakes of snow fell back in October, the first ground blanketing snow coming earlier this month and citizens hadn't even finished the Thanksgiving leftovers when the area’s first blizzard warning was issued.
The Old Farmers Almanac is predicting our area to experience a wet winter with above normal temperatures. We'll have to wait and see how accurate that report is.

    As a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Scouts pledge to follow Scout law which requires them to be, among other things—helpful, courteous, kind and loyal.  Through its annual holiday food drive,  Cub Scout Pack 466 seeks to display those characteristics and keep their promise to help others.

Festival of Trees opens Friday

Volunteers are decking out the Diamond Banquet Hall- for the annual Coal City Promfest Festival of Trees.
The festival, a fundraiser to support the annual post-prom celebration, opens Friday, Nov. 30 and continues through Sunday evening.
Christmas trees, both big and small, are the focus of the event hosted by the Promfest Committee, a group comprised of parents of Coal City High School junior class students. All of the trees; as well as holiday decorations and gift items are up for raffle.

Changes in recycling affect residents

Two related events in the waste industry will affect how Will and Grundy County residents recycle. Some of what you thought could go in your recycling bin is no longer accepted, and other items you thought were trash can actually be recycled.
The first thing that happened is that in 2017 China, the world’s largest recycler, placed a strict ban on some items. China will not accept plastic bags; tangled items such as hangers, hoses, wires, cords, ropes, or chains; or any type of clothing.

Three injured in Elwood crash

    The trucker who caused a wreck on Route 53 in Elwood last week didn’t have a valid CDL, and blew through a red light.
    Three people were seriously injured Wednesday, Nov. 21, in the crash at the intersection of Route 53 and Hoff Road. One of the injured required transport via medical helicopter.

Missed by the blizzard

    Kids might have grumbled about having to go to school when districts to the north of us had a snow day, but the adults were happy to have been spared the power outages, wind damage and deep heavy snow that could have come with Sunday night’s blizzard.
