Diamond to host holiday lighting ceremony

   It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and to celebrate the holiday season the village of Diamond has announced it will host its first annual holiday lighting ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 1.
    The event will get underway at 5 p.m. with the lighting ceremony followed by musical selections performed by Coal City High School’s Footnotes show choir. Santa and Mrs. Claus are slated to arrive from the North Pole to meet with children between 5:30 and 7 p.m. Parents/guardians can bring cameras to capture the moment.

Tis’ the season to lend a hand

     Christmas is five weeks away and to assure local families have a feast on the table and gifts under the tree, the Coal City Food Pantry is preparing for its annual holiday distribution.
    As its does each year, the pantry will host a special food and gift distribution early in December. And when it comes to the gifting, it’s decided to try something new this Christmas.

To celebrate the arrival of its new ambulance, the Coal City Fire Protection District kept with long standing tradition by wetting it down and pushing it into its designated spot in the apparatus bay.
It’s a ritual in the fire service to christen new apparatus with a wet-down ceremony, a practice that dates back to the 1800s when fire pumpers were pulled by horses.

Students score on statewide test

    Each spring, the Unit 1 School District administers a statewide assessment, an exam designed to measure academic progress. The results tell if local students are keeping pace with their peers.
    The results of the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam are in and testing data indicates a large percentage of students in grades three to eight are meeting standards, and making academic strides.

Coal City man dies of suspected heroin overdose

     Grundy County Coroner John W. Callahan along with the Coal City Police Department is investigating the death of a 26-year-old as a result of a suspected heroin overdose early this morning, Monday, Nov. 12.
    Callahan was called to a residence in the 400 block of W. Oak St., for the death of Coal City resident James Lee. There was evidence at the scene that supports the use of heroin.

Search organized for missing retired Andrew High School teacher

Volunteers are needed to help search on Saturday, Nov. 10, for missing retired Andrew High School teacher Daniel Jarski of Grant Park.
The search group will gather at 8 a.m. at Kankakee River State Park to comb a fishing/boat launch area located just west of Warner Bridge Road and south of Route 102. Parking is available. Anyone with training and experience in search and rescue efforts is invited to assist the group.  Members of the media also are welcome to attend.

Unofficial Will County election results

The following unofficial results of the Tuesday, Nov. 6 General Election were reported by the Will County Clerk at 10 p.m. Valid provisional ballots from Election Day and Vote by Mail ballots postmarked by Election Day will be added to these totals in 14 days. In 21 calendar days, the results are canvassed and become official.

 

Mayor: Braidwood is growing

Braidwood's mayor is fighting back against rumor and innuendo that the city is failing to grow.

Mayor Jim Vehrs said a reduction in crime and improvements at both the school district and the library have turned Braidwood into popular location for those looking to lay down some roots in Will County.

Chief credits focus on hard drugs for crime reduction

The nation remains in the grip of an opioid epidemic, as heroin and synthetic fentanyl continue to flood the market. So far in 2018, the Will County Coroner’s Office has reported 63 cases of overdose deaths related to heroin/fentanyl intoxication.

Those numbers include two confirmed deaths in Braidwood and one in Wilmington.

But Braidwood’s top cop said the city remains at the forefront, where officers are battling the crisis – and winning.

City audit delayed 60 days

Six months after the end of the fiscal year, Braidwood’s audit has yet to be revealed. But, Mayor Jim Vehrs said things are still under control in the city’s financial offices.

Per state law, a municipal audit is due to the state Comptroller’s office within 180 days of the close of the fiscal year. Braidwood’s fiscal year ends on April 30, which means the audit was due by the end of October.
