Reed-Custer Middle School celebrated Red Ribbon Week Oct.15 to 23.

Red Ribbon Week commemorates the ultimate sacrifice made by DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena. He died at the hands of drug traffickers in Mexico while fighting the battle against illegal drugs to keep our country and children safe.

Coalition assists BPD in drug takeback

The Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coaltion (BAHCC) stepped up efforts to battle drug issues over the weekend, participating in an event to help pull prescription drugs away from the grasp of potential misuse.

The Braidwood Police Department and the BAHCC participated in the national Drug Takeback event hosted by the DEA on Saturday, Oct. 27, where residents were encouraged to bring in their expired, unused, or unwanted medications.

Wilmington built a new sewer treatment plant a decade ago in part because stormwater infiltration frequently overloaded its old 1.25-million gallon per day facility. That's still happening, and it's even more significant.
Engineer Tim Juskiewicz from Strand Associates Inc. told the Water, Sewer, Streets and Alleys Committee that a 2.5-inch rain can more than quadruple the amount of water the wastewater plant has to process in a day.

Dispose of not used prescription drugs safely

    National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is Saturday, Oct. 27.
    The Wilmington Police Station will offer free safe disposal of prescription drugs from 10 a.m. to noon.
    The station is located at 129 Robert P. Weidling Dr.
    The event is being sponsored in part by the Wilmington Coalition for a Healthy Community.

Housing assistance no longer accepted

    Much of the city of Wilmington’s inventory of subsidized housing units is gone, as the new owner of the largest local complex is not participating in the federal housing assistance program.
    The Wilmington Riverview Apartments on South First Street, purchased in May by a Trust held at the First Midwest Bank and managed by George Realty in Naperville, are no longer accepting housing subsidies. There are seven buildings in the complex, with a total of about 46 one- and two-bedroom apartments, although only some were available with housing assistance.

Hometown Hero

Irving F. Dewald grew up in the small town of Espy, Pennsylvania, on the Susquehanna River. At age 16 he enlisted, with his father's permission, in the Pennsylvania National Guard's 28th Infantry Division.  After drilling with Company I for several months, Dewald who wanted a career in the military, decided the Army wasn't for him and persuaded his dad to sign for him to enlist in the Navy.

Coal City planning for the future

    Developing a strategic plan for the village of Coal City was a task the town’s Board of Trustees took on in 2018, and with priorities and goals set it’s time to start executing the long- and short-term objectives.
    The plan was developed over a series of months with input from municipal and community leaders. It outlines six key strategic priorities—downtown development and beautification, economic development, strategic and controlled growth, infrastructure improvements, quality of life/quality services, and technology use and effectiveness.

Non-profits gain tips from financial pros

    The Unit 1 School District, Mack & Associates, LLC and Coal City Bank, a branch of Bank of Pontiac, partnered together to offer a free financial practices seminar for community non-profits.
    The Oct. 17 seminar provided participants with information on budgeting, developing sound purchasing practices, establishing a financial checks and balances system and ways to identify signs of potential fraud.

Parents take a role in school safety

    At a time when school violence was dominating the news, Unit 1 School Superintendent Dr. Kent Bugg was focused on protecting the students in his district.
    With support from the Board of Education, Bugg and his administrative staff began developing a school safety action plan, one that in his words is, “a combination of hardening our schools and softening our schools.”
    It was during this process that the superintendent took part in a seminar he says completely changed his thought process about school safety.
