Post 1336 goes back to school

St. Juvin Post 1336 Veterans of Foreign Wars visited with the 325 fourth and fifth grade students, as well as staff members at Coal City Intermediate School on Wednesday, Oct. 10 with its History of the U. S. Flag presentation.  
The visit marks St. Juvin Post's third annual presentation at the historic school that is home to the Community Veterans Memorial.
Students helped out with the presentations that began with pre-Revolutionary War banners and went up to our present 50-star flag.

Property tax question on November ballot

    Grundy County voters will have an opportunity weigh in on a non-binding referendum that could provide property tax relief to Illinois residents.
    At the request of State Representative David Welter, the Grundy County Board considered and moved to place the advisory question on the November ballot.
    When voters go to the polls they will be asked to check the yes or no box under the question that reads, “Should the state of Illinois increase the residential and senior homeowner exemptions to help reduce property taxes for the residents of Grundy County?”

Police chief awarded $15,000 stipend

     In consideration of the value he’s brought to the Coal City Police Department, Chief Tom Best has been awarded a $15,000 stipend.
    In considering the additional compensation, Coal City village administrator Matt Fritz said the board took a look at the police chief’s work following significant events, including the disaster response to the 2015 tornado, multiple community related events involving school related investigations and his leadership that led to a new six-year collective bargaining agreement with the union representing the village’s sworn police officers.

But, what it takes to provide safe, abundant and affordable water is seldom something people consider, including where that water comes from, what it takes to bring it to homes and businesses, and what funds are available to develop new water sources, treatment options, and storage and delivery systems.

Cannon’s ‘pitch’ to Comets: Find your passion

Long before writing for an award-winning television show, penning a “perfect” script, and making her directorial debut, screenwriter, producer and actor Kay Cannon roamed the halls of Reed-Custer High School.

Cannon, a Custer Park native and 1992 Comet alum, paid a visit to her alma mater last week, stopping in to visit with students to talk about Hollywood, working hard, and finding her inspiration for the box office success Pitch Perfect.

Cannon is one of seven children raised in Custer Park, where her parents still live.

Will County earns cash for drug prevention

The Will County Sheriff’s Office has an additional resource for its drug prevention efforts.

On Oct. 11, sheriff’s office social worker Bonnie McPhillips made a presentation in front of the Will County Board Executive Committee, announcing that the department-supported coalition, the Will County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, is the recipient of a $125,000 federal Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Grant.

City picks up park transfer talk

    City negotiations with the Island Park District in the past have literally flashed and burned, regardless of the topic, but the concept of transferring inland park property to the district has not died out.
    City administrator Joie Ziller recently renewed the property transfer discussion with Park District director Renee Chavez, who wants a couple things before the district would agree to accept the Veterans Memorial Park and Children’s Memorial Park.

WBSA lease amended, sent again for approval

    A lease between the city of Wilmington and the Wilmington Baseball and Softball Association got a final tune up last week, and was returned to the City Council for approval at its Oct. 16 meeting.
    The proposed lease is modeled on the 99-year lease provided to the Bobcat Junior Football League for the fields on Soldiers Widows Home Road, with some significant differences — a much shorter term and a narrow definition of premises.

City asked to move its stuff, pay up, and de-annex land

    The city has been asked to move its electric line off of private property, and to then de-annex the parcel. And while the city was going to be given an easement in return, now there’s money involved.
    Last week, the Water, Sewer, Streets and Alleys Committee reviewed a quote for new electric service to the Chesson Street lift station offered by Clennon Electric, in the amount of $7,000. According to city administrator Joie Ziller, the city lift station is fed by  an electrical service that comes across a privately-owned farm field to Kahler Road.

WPD car show will raise funds to buy toys

    The Wilmington Police Department is hosting a car show to raise funds to purchase toys for the less fortunate youngsters of the community.
    The show will be held Sunday, Oct. 21, from 1 to 5 p.m., on the municipal parking lot on the west bank of the millrace, near Nelly’s.
    The cost to display a vehicle is $20. A Best of Show trophy will be awarded.
