BAHCC kicks off plans for grant dollars

The Braidwood Area Healthy Community Coalition (BAHCC) has grown in size and scope over the past several years. Now, thanks to federal grant dollars, the coalition has been able to add to its professional staff, hiring a new project coordinator for its Drug Free Communities (DFC) grant projects.

Earlier this month, the BAHCC announced that Shree Woods has been named to the new position.

Woods formerly worked with the BAHCC as a representative from the Will County Health Department.

RC School district looks to capture $26 million in taxes

The Reed-Custer School District aims to keep taxes nearly even as the new year approaches.

On Nov. 20, Superintendent Mark Mitchell presented the board of education with a rundown of the 2018 tax levy, the amount of cash the district hopes to capture from property taxes for operations for the next year.

“It’s probably the most important act that we do each year at the school board, to guarantee our funding for the next year,” Mitchell said.

Launching Pad owners to be honored

    No trip down Illinois Route 66 is complete without a visit to the Gemini Giant, and the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s 2018 Business Persons of the Year have ensured the spaceman will be there to greet them for generations to come.
    Tully Garrett and Holly Barker, the new owners of The Launching Pad Drive-In, are being honored by the Chamber for their contribution to the community.

Low clearance at Kankakee

    The barricades at the Union Pacific crossing of Kankakee Street came down last week, but something new went up — signage warning motorists to use extra care when going over the tracks.
    Low clearance signs were posted on Kankakee Street at Chicago Street and Canal Street. The community will likely have to live with the “humpback” crossing until the Union Pacific Railroad comes up with a new design over the winter and builds it in the spring.

“Christmas Together,” an original holiday tale will be presented this weekend in the Coal City Performing Arts Center, it’s the dance company’s seventh annual holiday show.

Giving thanks by giving back

    Cathy Milne stood at the entrance of the Help for Hope office with a smile on her face, thankful for the giving that took place this week.
    It has become tradition that Thanksgiving week begins with a group of high schoolers delivering a bus load of turkeys and other holiday dinner items, and this year was no different. For an eighth consecutive year, at the request of Coal City High School’s choir groups and their director Bonnie McDowell, employees of the Unit 1 School District gave thanks by giving back to the community.

    City officials discussed residents’ request to consider allowing leaf burning, but determined it’s too late to make any changes that would help residents with disposal this year.
    The City Council agreed to terminate the city’s leaf collection program last spring. But now, faced with lawns covered in autumn leaves, residents are asking for an alternative to bagging. Many say they can’t afford landscape waste bags, or can’t do the labor required to fill them, and they want to burn.

Santa is coming to Coal City

Santa Claus and his elves at the North Pole are busy preparing for Christmas, but the jolly old elf himself has announced a pre-Christmas visit to the village of Coal City this weekend to flip the switch to turn on the village's holiday tree and decorations.
Santa is scheduled to arrive in the village Sunday, Nov. 25 and make his way to Campbell Memorial Park around 4 p.m. with assistance from his friends at the Coal City Fire Protection District.

Morris Hospital breaks ground for new facility

The tips of six golden shovels pierced the ground, and the first spades of dirt were turned, marking the start of construction on a 13,400-square foot medical facility in the village of Diamond.
    Morris Hospital & Healthcare Center is investing $7.1 million on the new facility to be located at 1450 E. Division St.
    “The new facility will allow Morris Hospital to bring several new services to the community,” said Mark Steadham, president and CEO of Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.

Election packet mix up blamed on county

City officials are blaming misinformation from the county level for a mistake regarding the distribution of candidate packets for those looking to run for office during the spring election cycle.

On Nov. 13, city attorney Bryan Kopman said that packets circulated by the city for candidates were supplied with the wrong deadline and the wrong election date information. But, Kopman said, the incorrect info came directly from the county.
